I dropped my phone today and there's a crack in the screen and the screen is totally black and unresponsive. I can hear the text message notification going off, but I obviously cannot see anything. My question is, is there any way to connect to a computer to view the messages, contacts, etc. or am I out of luck? TIA

Since its time for a new phone anyway, they maybe able to do it in store when transferring to the new phone.

To do it on your own you either had to have an app that backs up SMS already setup or your computer needs to be able to read the phone and you had to be already rooted because SMS is stored behind root.

I had the same thing happen, it was a huge pain in the arse. for some reason i never synced my contacts with google. how do you unlock your phone? what I did, i would only recommend if your phone isnt locked, or if you have a VERY simple pattern unlock, AND you have haptic feedback enabled. I had to buy the mhl to hdmi out adapter, as well as microusb to usbA adapter. you basically plug a mouse ito the phone using a usb adapter, then try to guess viatrial and error where you're moving and clicking with the mouse, going back and forth with the monitor and the mouse. unlock it then export contacts and texts to your sd card. it ended up taking me over an hour, but it saved me fifty bucks to have the data recovered at a repair shop

This happened to me twice with the s4. You can either order a new screen for around $100 on eBay and install it (requires quite a bit of mechanical knowledge) or you can get and hdmi adapter and hook your phone up to a TV or monitor and see everything on the phone and transfer anything you need. The adapters are anywhere from $5-30 dollars, but the cheap ones sometimes don't work well.
