I have an iPhone4 and need to get a new one. I use it for talk, text, an occasional photo, and surfing the web. No tv, games, or movies. Is buying one of the $700 phones worth it or should I just go with one of the cheaper $100-200 models? I'm not poor but don't see the point in paying top dollar if not needed. Also thinking about nixing CSpire for Cricket or Basic Talk. Any advice appreciated....

The problem with buying a cheaper model now is that right now its a bare minimum device, and 1-2 years from now it will be unusable.

My LG G3 broke so I have been using my old Galaxy S3 until the Note 7 comes out next week, and all I can do with it is call/text. It's way too slow with way too weak of a processor to do anything else like surf the web. I'll try to browse TD and it freezes or crashes. Opening a simple app like MLB At Bat takes at least a minute to load. It's annoying. Just 4 years ago this phone was top of the line.

Cheap phones are fine for the bare minimum but they will become outdated very quickly. Technically they already are outdated, its just that they will become even more so as time goes on.

It's a matter if you are OK with getting a new phone frequently or investing in a more top level phone now and riding it out for multiple years, knowing you are somewhat future proofed.

I have one that cost 169 retail. Don't do it. Slow and I literally have maybe 5 pictures and I'm already out of memory.

I used to think about my phones like the OP. But these days I rely on my phone for so many daily tasks that I've come to the conclusion that it's worth going top of the line. $800 over 2-3 years is pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the input guys. Gonna look into the Asus Zenphone. I like the 4g of RAM. It is only in the $200's and very fast. About 1/3 price of Apple and Samsung. Hope I'm not messing up. Thanks again.

Maybe 2 or 3 years ago you had to buy a flagship expensive phone, but now there are plenty of cheap androids that perform well and are quality phones.

You can between spend 200 to 300 bucks and get a really quality phone. It just has to be an AOSP based device. Stock Android is preferable.

The Moto G line is great for sub 200.00 phones. Just make sure you get a phone with more than 8gb of internal storage.

The LG G3 is still a good phone for a reasonable price. I have a G4 and honestly I don't notice any difference in performance compared to my spouse's G3. Here's some on eBay: LINK

Get a Moto x pure edition. Unlocked so it works on most if not all carriers and it's only $325 or so.

If you are not bothered by the size of your current screen, you should look into the iPhone SE. It's basically an iPhone 5s body with an iPhone 6's tech and starts at $400. I'm sure you'd adjust to Android just fine if you wanted something cheaper, but there is also some value in keeping the familiar interface and apps.

As others have said, there are plenty of mid-range phones that will be perfectly fine for you, especially if you're on a GSM carrier (AT&T, TMobile, or one of the MVNOs that use their towers). Some phones also have the radios to access all of the US networks. I'd recommend...

Nexus 6p
Older iPhone (5s or 6) - check swappa.com
Moto X Pure Edition
One Plus 3
Huawei Honor 5X
Moto G4 Plus

Some of these guys are being a little dramatic about how bad using an older phone can be. I use my phone much more than you described in the OP and I'm still using the iPhone 5s, it works great.

You can get one in Mint condition on swappa for under $300. Anything in the $200-$300 range will work great for what you want to do.

I have a Droid Turbo or Turbo 2 or something and I love it because it charges fast AF and stays charged which is my main concern since I use mine for basically what you listed.

But Samsung would be my primary choice when I upgrade probably. Although it will be a tough call. They make some fine phones.

:keege: I'm currently using an LG G2 and it still runs great. I have no qualms about it at all. It might be one of the most underrated phones of all time.
