I've done a little bit of research and have read through these 2 links on installing OpenWRT and OpenVPN:

wiki.openwrt.org

OpenWRT with OpenVPN Server blog post how to

Anyone here have experience with this? Any tips or suggestions before I dive in? For setting up OpenVPN, is it as easy as copy/pasting from the 2nd link? Do I really need to set the default IP?

So I ended up having to flash dd-wrt onto the router first because openwrt hasn't been updated to flash on top of the latest version of the factory firmware. I had to ssh into the router which for a noob like me was way easier than I anticipated. After that I followed the instructions here: LINK

I dropped my 2 viscosity VPN subscriptions (desktop and laptop) that ran about $100/year for 1 PIA sub for $40/year. Now I'm able to watch the Astros through my Apple TV with no problem. Unfortunately Netflix and Hulu block access through VPNs so I have to swap which Ethernet cable is plugged into the Apple TV based on whether or not in watching the Astros.
