'Five-dimensional' glass discs can store data for up to 13.8 billion years

Scientists from the University of Southampton in the UK have created a new data format that encodes information in tiny nanostructures in glass. A standard-sized disc can store around 360 terabytes of data, with an estimated lifespan of 13.8 billion years at temperatures up to 190°C. That's as old as the Universe, and more than three times the age of the Earth.

5D discs, by comparison, store information within their interior using tiny physical structures known as "nanogratings." Much like those bumpy lines in the CDs, these change how light is reflected, but instead of doing so in just two "dimensions," the reflected light encodes five, hence the name. The changes to the light can be read to obtain pieces of information about the nanograting's orientation, the strength of the light it refracts, and its location in space on the x, y, and z axes. These extra dimensions are why 5D discs can store data so densely compared to regular optical discs. A Blu-ray disc can store a maximum of 128GBs of data (the same as the biggest iPhone), while a 5D disc of the same size could store nearly 3,000 times that: 360 terabytes of information.

I feel like they can make that into a pill and we can absorb the knowledge and we can be Matrix/Limitless.

I remember seeing a story like this in 1995 with scientists recording data on/in crystals.

Useless. What happens in 500 years when we revert back to the Middle Ages (and it will happen)? Some a-hole looking for weed will step on those things.

Kind of reminds me of the data disk used in Zenon, just less rainbow colored.

Well that's useless. In just 50 years there will be zero machines that will read that type of media. Who still has a 3.5" floppy drive that doesn't live in his mother's basement?

i'll believe this when someone can provide me with a working jaz drive to copy all my data off.

I got a USB 3.5 external...have no frikkin idea where the floppys are...like you said, who the hell can read them anyways?

i still have my TRS-80 5.25 floppy with my INSANELY GREAT computer camp program I wrote in BASIC and a copy of ASCII berzerk and "Hunt the Wumpus".
i sure wish i could use it.

can i get a Jor-El type voice to go with it when I pull the data out in my fortress of solitude?

I can see you're a saver too...I got a huge pile to sort out...take several months if not longer { saving is ok, as long as you periodically purge and I ain't purged much to speak of in a long while ]
maybe somebody, somewhere, has a working tandy
