Does anyone know if the Ecobee Thermostat is compatible with an old R22 system? The help desk at Ecobee does not seem to know what R22 is.

TIA

R22 is the old freon that is being phased out.

What freon your ac uses has absolutely no bearing on your thermostat. It simply turns the unit on or off based on temperature in your house and what you want it to be.

That is what I thought. But I had a self-proclaimed AC expert tell me otherwise.

Thermostats are all about wires. Take you cover off of your current thermostat and look at the labels for the wire connections. Unless you have a communicating thermostat, you should be good to go.

Yes. One of my units is still r22 and has an ecobee on it. works fine. I dont think rhe electronics are any different, just the coil and gas.

The only thing that can make the ecobee install challenging is if you don't have a c wire. They have a solution for that though.

Refrigerant type has no bearing on the thermostat.

Number of thermostat wires you have in place may though. Worst case IMHO would be you have to run off battery or run an additional wire for power from the air handler board.
