Want to rip my kids' DVD/Blue-rays to an external hard drive to put on tablet/old iphone for them to watch when we aren't home. What's the best software/program for this?

I don't know about the best, but a free one that rips into one file is MakeMKV.

I'm having issues with handbrake not working. Apparently it won't rip some encrypted disks.

Yeah, a lot of discs with copy protection will not work with MakeMKV or Handbrake.

For these discs I use AnyDVD HD. It's expensive, but it flat out strips the copy protections and tricks DVD/BD manufacturers like to employ to prevent copying.

Handbrake can do it if you download the dvdlib.css file and replace it on your program file location.

I use Handbrake for DVDs, and MakeMKV coupled with Handbrake for Blurays. Works very well, and no issues ripping all my library to .mp4.

MakeMKV is great, but makes an exact copy of the DVD file. Handbrake reencodes it and compresses the file size. I even have a few low quality "ipad" versions so I can cram a few more on my 16Gb ipad.

MakeMKV to rip then handbrake to re-encode/transcode. Personally, I would use Handbrake settings that would be acceptable for watching on a Full sized TV, and then getting a Plex Pass and syncing any content to your kids tablets. It is a bit more work on the front end, and may require you to assemble a Plex server, but once it is set up it is really slick. A bit of warning, there seems to be an issue with iOS devices and syncing content. It is really slow on my wife's iPad/iPhone but I have no issue with any of my Android devices.

My computer freaked out on me when i tried to download the dvdlib.css file. What you think that was about?

Not sure, it's just a file so you should be able to simply save it and then move it into the program folder. There may be a different file for 64 bit vs 32 bit programs, although I believe I've used both. Neither caused any computer issues.

MakeMKV should do it. Have to be careful with playlist obfuscation though. Bastards are slick and cause an extra few mins of research, or hour of checking to make sure you get the movie in the right order.

You'll know immediately when you get 200+ playlists. And there's different "correct" playlists depending on the DVD/Bluray version.
