Doubtful but hopefully someone can give me an answer. My uncle had a Toshiba LCD Tv that has multiple cracks on the screen, he was prepared to throw it out but I took it with the intention of trying to fix it to use as an outdoor tv on a covered patio.

How feasible is it to simply replace the cracked screen with a new one? I can't seem to find parts online except for boards, power supply, etc but just started looking so have to research more. The TV powers on just fine and I can see parts of the picture through the cracks, so I know there is nothing wrong with the main board or power supply. Volume also works, only picture is screwed.

Just wondering if it is worth the time and effort or even doable at all. If I could find a replacement for $100-$150 it would be worthwile to me rather than buying a new TV of this same size. Also don't particularly want to put a brand new umit outside even though it is mostly protected from the elements.

Thanks for any input folks

tLDR;
Is it possible to replace a busted screen on Toshiba LCD for less than $150 bucks?

Your best bet is eBay for that kind of thing - people who salvage electronics and sell used parts. If you can't find it online, you're probably SOL. As far as I know, replacement TV panels are not a big market because they lack universal compatibility -- meaning, you have to find the exact panel for your exact model. In addition, the panel is the bulk of a TV's cost, and third-party sellers still have to sell at a markup. The panel itself will have to come from the OEM, because it's not exactly feasible for Chinese companies to make a knock-off proprietary TV panel like they do for iPhone screens and the like. Much more profitable for them to just sell the whole TV. That means you're more than likely at the mercy of Toshiba to sell you a panel at a cost low enough to justify rather than buy a new TV. Not likely.

I tried to get an old screen replaced... cheaper to buy a new version of the same quality and size than to repair the old one.

Just buy a new tv. Like the other poster said, eBay it or craigslist it then get a new one. What size is it? It will def cost you more than $150 you are trying to spend.

It's a 42 inch. That's what i was thinking but didn't know if panels had become much cheaper to replace when everything else dropped in price. Will try finding a reasonable alternative on Craig's list.

Or my next thread will be "is anyone selling a LCD tv for cheap" and I'll get banned kill

Just looked and saw a Hisense 40 inch for 220 at Wal Mart. I'm sure you could scoop up a 42inch of your choice used for around the same.

Cool. Yea I guess I'm just gonna toss it and try to find something. I just feel really uneasy about putting a new TV outside even though it's covered without building some kind of enclosure. I'll check used

I had one replaced, but it was covered under the HH Gregg warranty. I forget the model number, but it was a 46 inch Toshiba that my dad bought for me, and for some reason he got the warranty on that one and the one he was buying for himself. He said he never does that, but it just so happened that he was spending over a grand and thought it might be worth it if either had problems. Mine was getting these red vertical lines on the screen. It would show up when you turned it on, and then after about 20-30 minutes would start fading out. After an hour or so you couldn't see them. Then of course they quit going away, and it was annoying. One was in the middle, and the other off to the left 1/3 of the screen. They sent a guy out who took it apart, put a new screen in, and hooked it all back up. Didn't take him but an hour or so. So you might want to call around to local repair places and see what they say. Can't hurt to try.

Also, this was out of Toshiba warranty, but it was a known issue with that model and they were even replacing the screens for free even out of warranty. Didn't matter to me since I had the HH Gregg extended warranty, but I was a little shocked to see a big manufacturer honoring a defect on a couple years old TV.

The worse thing was that it happened again about 6 months later on the replacement screen. I called up HH Gregg warranty again, told them what was happening, and they tried to get me to let them replace the screen again. After a few minutes of back and forth with them, they sent out someone with a brand new Samsung 46 inch a couple days later, hooked it up, and took the old Toshiba with them. I've shied away from Toshiba sets since then, and will only buy Samsung.

I would just buy a new one. The time I would spend fixing it is much more valuable to me than the money I would spend buying a new one.
