My mid 2009 Macbook Pro has just about bit the dust. I have replaced HD with SSD and upgraded to 8gb ram but even with that it has started lagging very bad and hanging up. I have zero complaints with it and wouldn't hesitate to get another but I was looking at the XPS because it is much cheaper and looks really good. Anyone bought one yet and have comments on it?

Before the usual bullshite begins in this thread, make up your mind definitively between Windows and OS X rather than immediately asking about specific laptop brands. Otherwise this is just going to be another Mac vs. PC thunderdome of the stupids.

Yep I do not want it turning into that. I am definitely interested in a fast windows based laptop for internet and microsoft office use. The Dell XPS stuck out because of the good reviews I saw.

Bought an XPS in 2009 with a 3 year accidental/full warranty ($1,500+).

In those 3 years, I had 3 motherboard failures (CPU and GPU related) and replacements. 2 months after the warranty expired, the board fried again and now the thing is a paperweight in my office until I decide to replace it.

Bought my wife an XPS in 2010 for grad school with the same warranty. 2 board failures/replacements.

Bought my mom and brother Dell comps through my credit account; same results.

Won't buy another Dell, period. Closed my account with them and never looked back.

In 2009 I switched from a POS Dell XPS that would short out to my MacBook. Just upgraded to a SSD and it flies again.

The problem with the 2009 model is that you likely only get another year or two until you will no longer be able to support newer OS updates. You will ultimately have to decide if those newer features are worth it to you.

If you like OS X and it meets your needs, get another MacBook. You got 6 years out of this one. Realistically, I doubt you'll get that out of an XPS.

I got one in 2012 and it's still going strong. I replaced the HD with a SSD last year and that was a smart move. Once this thing dies or gets outdated, I think I may look into the Surface Pro line. But I don't see this thing going away for at least another 2 years.

The tough thing about this laptop is finding one in person. Dell basically just sells online and I cannot find one in a story anywhere.

So I haven't really looked at Dells in a while. What is special about their most recent XPS models? I've had a couple of Dells with no real issues, but they have always been pretty ordinary, not worth buying without scoring one of those amazing 30%+ off coupon codes.

The new XPS 13 inch is rated the best Ultrabook by most magazines and online publications. The build quality and design get really high marks but I am not totally sold on anything yet.

I work for a Dell re seller and honestly my faith in their laptops have taken a hit the last couple years. Seems like we are having more and more problems with them.

I have the new xps (2015) and it is bad arse. I loaded it out through work, intel i7 broadwell, 8gigs of ram, 512SSD, 3200 x 1800 touch screen. Battery life is better than I need. Great ultrabook that has replaced my desktop at work I use this for everything and just use the dell 3000 USB dock and hook it up at work.

No complaints and I highly recommend as of now. I've been running it since late February.

I currently have two Lenovo laptops at work and while solid, not sure it is what I am looking for at home.

The Y and Yoga series are better than anything Dell makes(IMO), way different than a ThinkPad.

The XPS 13 that was just released is a powerful notebook and at a great price point. I would check engadget for reviews as well.

The Lenovo Y series and Yoga feel like they were made out of the cheapest materials possible.

I had that model, too. The motherboard failures were caused by NVidia's faulty 8400/8600M, the same cards that caused failures in early Macbook Pro models.

I bunch of our non-devs have gotten the new XPS 13 at work and it is a really nice looking machine. I haven't heard of any complaints from anyone yet.

Yep, $799 is a great deal for an i3 and 4gb's of ram.

Now I know you have no idea what you're talking about. The Yoga and XPS are made out of the same materials. The Y series is more study than both of them. At least look up what you're talking about.
