So I resurrected my wife's computer for a little project I'm working on here at the house tonight but the peripheral drivers and the software I need to use with the peripherals won't play nice with XP obviously.

I'm looking around and thinking of upgrading, but I'm not real interested in sinking cash into this process. If I have to I'll just bring the work laptop home over the weekend and handle up on this.

But it does have me wondering. What would you guys do with a very, very lightly used laptop that's running XP...and running like a top?

Suggestions? Oh and if there's any way I can bump up to more nascent version of Windows for free, I'm all ears.

I have a gateway that still runs. It did better when I upgraded it to 7.

Make sure you have virus/malware software active and running. Also make sure you're using a browser besides IE. Not only for updated security reasons, but the web left IE 8 so far behind it's a pretty crappy experience on that browser.

That was my personal experience as well. I guess one question though is what kind of hardware are we talking. I know 7 likes memory a lot more, I can't function unless it's 64 bit with plenty of RAM.

I am attempting to use a vinyl cutting machine which uses a program that only operates in Windows or on a Mac. I'm not opposed to tweaking the OS but I am also not a tinkerer. I want a solution that's stable and can do what I want when I need it done.
