My son will be heading off to Davidson College in August. I'd like to get him an all-around laptop that will last 4yrs in the $1,200 range. Reliability and durability are key. Looking at the Dell XPS13 and MacBook. Any thoughts?

what's his major? don't bother to get him a Macbook if he's planning to get an engineering degree

Can always run Windows on a MacBook

Don't buy a mac unless he's getting a liberal arts degree, and even then it's situational

Yeah, our computer labs at my college are all iMacs and stay on Windows 90% of the time, and run the windows applications at 60% efficiency, and we are a liberal arts school. Such a waste of money

yea but that would kill your Macbook faster.

Sounds like it unless I'm pulling a Sheldon and didn't catch it as it was flying over my head

Get you a 600-700 laptop with an i5 not with the letter U at the end and get one with cheap storage like a 500 GB hard drive and then buy you a Samsung 850 evo around the 512GB range and debloat the laptop.

Not really, in general Mac's have the same components as pc counterparts there is no reason that running a partition or vm of Windows could harm the Macbook except by using more power. Regardless of your son's major any Mac would work for any purpose your son could have. What is beneficial during college while away from parents is the combination of Applecare and Apple Stores making it super easy to fix things should a problem arise.
Of course he may want a windows gaming laptop which could work too. My advise is find a device that is most comfortable to use for 8+ hours for work and then buy that (specs be damned).

He's biology (pre-med) and Davidson is a liberal arts school. So, it's best to get a Windows based laptop?

Not at all. There was no basis of truth in his statement.

Yes, I would recommend it. Get a Dell and get the 4 year extended warranty on it. Get one with and i5 and either a 500 or so HDD (hard drive) or get one of the ones with an ssd (the ssd one will last longer)

Sounds like someone's IT staff does not know how to configure machines properly.

If you are running QIIME on anything other than a Linux device you wasted money. You need a big hard drive and lots of memory, and both are extremely cheap if you build it yourself and go linux

he's obviously smart, so let him get what he wants. either mac or pc will be fine for premed. it's really about what os he prefers. many think macs last a little longer than pc's. they certainly have better build quality than a typical pc, but i haven't used an xps in years. my experience with mac has been great fwiw.
eta also a factor is if he uses iphone and ipad. these will obviously work better with a mac.
