Perhaps this has been discussed, one or one hundred times.

But tell me how this now works? I'm with Sprint and I may want to upgrade as I am now eligible.

Any phone that I select can now be paid over the course of 24 months (at full retail price).

What happened to the discounted phones, based upon years of service to choose from?

For example, let's say I want an HTC One M8 - in the past (M7), I could buy it discounted for $199.99 minus $50 instant rebate, providing I am willing to re-commit to 2 years. Right now, I'd have to pay right at $28.00 for this month, every month, for 24 months. This doesn't appear like something I want to do..

First, I'd rather BUY something, not lease to own. Get it over with. Second, with all the competition out there, shouldn't a customer have leverage over their cell phone company to get more, i.e. new discounted cell phone to continue utilizing their service or is it now "play the change carriers game"?

Has this option been eliminated? Is this now a thing of the past?

I think it's a thing of the past sadly

Att had started doing the lease the phone thing now rather than the discounted upgrade

Eta you edited on me, but I wonder if you could buy the phone cheaper somewhere else rather than the sprint store

So all carriers, i.e. T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon followed AT&T's lead?

Is that what started all this? How is this good for the consumer? I'm open minded, so if I am not seeing it correctly, someone please educate me.

I haven't checked. Perhaps, I should. I may take a look at Costco, Let's Talk.com and Amazon.

I don't know who all is doing it. My sis just recently went and was told she was available for a "free upgrade" and signed stuff without reading it

Now she's leasing a $600 phone

I can't believe cell phone carriers are acting like car dealerships now.

I want to say costco has a cell phone spot set up and may sell the phones cheaper there

True. I was in a Costco today. I would also check Amazon, particularly if you are a prime member.

Your rate for service should be significantly lower. They are getting away from the service contracts.

This is simply not true. I just 're-upped with att. As long as you're through with your 24 month contract, you can sign a new 24 month contract. If not, and you don't want to wait, then you sign with att next.

Look at Amazon. Their prices are usually better.

I think places like Best Buy will honor internet retailer's (Amazon) pricing too.

T-Mobile started this shite and everyone is following suit. I'm still on an old family plan with AT&T and still can get the 2 yr agreement upgrades, for now. The days of subsidized phones is ending. If wouldn't be an issue if all carriers had the same technology, you could take your phone and jump easily but they don't. I view the cable and phone companies like mini opecs collaborating to control the whole industry.

Yeah but you can select the old way of upgrading online as well

AT&T still offers the 2 year contracts.

For those who are on the Mobile Share Value Plan they offer, however, will get the best price on the service plan if the phone is purchased with the NEXT program. I believe its a savings of $25 a month on the plan.

I am with Sprint, and my understanding is they are slowing trying to move away from the contract model, but the normal old rules apply if you are really at you upgrade time (end of contract). They DO offer the "easy pay" plan where you can purchase your new phone over 24 months. for most new models this works out to between $20 and $28 extra per month on your bill.

I know this because I just cracked the screen on my phone and had to look into it, so it's either $25 a month now for a new one, or wait till March when my contract is up and get a new one for whatever the low flat fee is ($100 or $150, whatever it comes out to be after rebates and with a new contract).

You've always paid full price, more than full price if you didn't upgrade as soon as they let you. Just because they hid it behind a contract doesn't mean you were getting a better deal before. The reason they are doing this is because TMobile and Sprint are forcing the market towards more consumer friendly pricing, so maybe you're paying "more" for your phone now, but you should be getting a better deal on your phone+plan today than you did 2 years ago.

My plan's pricing, to my knowledge, hasn't changed.

It should have

Verizon's EDGe program and ATT's NEXT program have you pay for the phone in installments but your line access charges are lower

It's a wash with the older contract plans until the phone is paid off, then it becomes significantly cheaper

It also gives you more options on upgrade eligibility

The old plans forced you to pay for the phone whether you realized or not

Maybe you should look into the new/current plans, I saw an ad yesterday for Sprint talking about 20GB of shared data family plan for $100 per month. Their CEO recently said they plan to be "disruptive" with their pricing.

I know I've cut my cell phone bill nearly in half with AT&T in the past year. It will go up some when I upgrade my phone, but the longer you hold you hold onto your phones the more you save vs. the previous plans.
