Can someone explain to me why I can't use Adobe stuff with Chrome lately

Since the last Chrome update, I can't use my Reader plugin for opening PDFs in browser, which I liked. Looking around I see that it's an issue of NPAPI support. No idea about the technical aspects of that.
Now I'm getting warnings that certain sites are using a plugin that will soon be unsupported, and it's Adobe Flash Player.
Is this some kind of a turf struggle? Why is it that previously-supporting things are going away? Is this going to happen with other browsers?

I'm having the same issues. I can't use Chrome at work anymore because half of the shite I need to work will not load.
