Can Data still be used while on wifi?

I always assumed if you were on wifi, data from a carrier wouldn't be consumed.

Depends, if your phone has a "wifi assist feature", it will use data when a speed boost is necessary.

Knowing what kind of phone you have will help with an answer. Iphones are known for using data when you have a weak wifi signal. It's one of those "it just works" features that they don't tell you about.

Yes. Like it was said earlier, some Android phones have a feature in which they will start using LTE if your WiFi becomes too weak or loses internet access.

Most phones also turn on data briefly in order to send MMS. There are a few messaging apps that can now send MMS over WiFi, but most stock messaging apps don't have that feature.
