Time to move past Ring

What would you do on your house for a decent budget right now?

Ring isn't really a security camera IMO. Cool for what it is but unless you are using it in conjunction with a CCTV system it's nothing more than a video doorbell. Wireless wifi cameras are in the same boat. Great to check in on the kids or dog but not a real security camera.

I just ruled out an entire category of useless shite.

If it were my house I'd put in some cheap Chinese TVI cameras. Something like Hikvision. Simple, efficient, and it works. All you need is power.

I'm not sure about outdoor foscam but id it were me I'd want these hardware features

- ir/night vision
- hd (duh)
- ability to rotate the camera remotely.
- PoE
- no monthly cloud bullshite charges

PoE is critical because outdoors is probably getting a worse wifi signal than indoors and you don't want a wifi hiccup at the wrong time and all you have to do is poke one cable through the soffit and never worry whether there's an outlet nearby.

Nobody should plan their security camera placement based on availability of nearby electrical outlets and unless you're handy an electrician will charge you $150 a pop to create them.

Eta didn't talk about software but I think Blue iris is still the best and due everything you want for like $30 including DVR, etc. I know the foscams allow you to set movement zones, etc to trigger a notification or email you a series of images or 5 minute recording, etc.

Yes, I read that in your OP. The Ring will still be great for a video doorbell. I'd still use it for that purpose and just add a CCTV to it for security.

Oh you mean like the ones that were recently hacked in mass and used for a massive DDOS attack?

That's the plan, was wondering about specific models.

I haven't looked recently but I imagine a basic foscam with outdoor support would work. I'll check when I get into work.

Why wifi sucks for security period

That's not the case. People have been installing CCTV over RG59-18/2 siamese cable for decades. On a non IP system like a TVI you just run siamese cable to all your camera drops. Power it on the headend, just like you would with a Poe switch, with a power supply. Less headache IMO than dealing with switches. Power and signal, real simple and does not need network. Not that POE cameras are bad this is just the way it's been done for years. You can get further runs too without having to add another switch.

Yes, change your password. In addition a CCTV doesn't need to be hooked to the Internet to work. You can hook up a system and never put it online.

Not saying you're wrong but what is so difficult about a switch? You plug it in then plug in Ethernet cables as you add devices. Where the hassle?

Switches are a install and forget type of thing for me.

Just like everything else they break. Lose power, go offline and then they come back up and sometimes need to be set up again. Heck I know one of the bigger companies in my area who puts UPS on all switches just b/c of that. Not saying it always happens but I've seen additional headaches with them. Enough to just go the traditional route for anything less than 2MP. Just a preference thing but my point is you can run power over siamese cable and don't need to have electrical outlets at camera locations if you don't go POE.

Newegg has the 3MP & 4MP Hikvision domes for $80/$100. Seriously debating those, Hikvision seems to be loved on the boards. No warranty since it's not an authorized seller though.
