Have the opportunity to purchase a 4 month old valentine one v1 for $350 w/ all hardware and latest updates or new escort/passport 9500ix for $380? Is one a much better deal than the other or to be safe buy new?

Radar detectors frick up because of heat. V1 has a metal casing. My current one is probably 5 years old with zero problems other than me not having the latest update. I've had them for 16 years, and haven't had a single problem with any of them.
All radar detectors do take some time for you to figure out. I'd say 6 months is enough for you to somewhat grasp what it reads.
You can also tune it. Look up programming options on the website. The arrows are priceless
Eta: I hard wired mine into the interior fuse panel using one of those add-a-fuse things. Doesn't take up a cigarette lighter spot, turns off when the truck turns off, and I don't have to look at the cord. Do that

Nah was thinking of moving over to OT but didn't want to deal with all the BS

The arrows is what sets the v1 apart. Also make sure it has the latest firmware or you will have to pay for an upgrade. If not you will have to deal with tahoes and 18 wheelers setting it off constantly

The newer ones have an app for your phone that will warn you when some other driver's detector picks up an alarm. Sorta like Waze's cop alert.

The valentine is legit. I have a escort passport max 2 and haven't had any problems. I have it hardwired with a mirror bracket and it will alert me a good mile in advance.
The valentine won't win a beauty contest but it will save your arse. It's a bad bitch

Get serial number and confirm with V1 that it's not stolen or reported stolen.
They won't service it later if they think it's been stolen.

I'm a huge fan of the V1. I can't live without the arrows now. Personally I would buy new over a used unit. If you have an Android device look into the YaV1 app. It really helps you fine tune the V1.

Someone has to step up so here goes.

FWIW, I think you can get a brand new V1 for $400

The simple trick is to only break one law at a time. Follow the rules of the road and don't drive like a maniac and draw attention to yourself. This combined with a good detector will result in faster travels and no tickets.
