Just got off the phone with cox and they are sending someone to look at my internet but more than likely I'll need a new modem since the one I have is probably close to 10 years old.

So my question is, do I just purchase the modem they offer me at ~$80 or should I get one on my own for ~$65?

I'd buy my own Motorola 6141 & call it a day.

This or if you want to be ready for 16x4 get the 6183.

Depends on what package you have and plan on having in the future. 6141 is everyone's go-to, although I have a ZOOM 5350 with Cox Ultimate, works great, but I don't use the built-in wireless N so when I upgrade it will be a 6183 most likely.

It's channel bonding. Throughput is shared through multiple streams. 16x4 is 16 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels. It allows for greater maximum throughput.

Older DOCSIS 3.0 modem were 4x4. The 6141 is 8x4. The 6183 I mentioned is 16x4.

As network technology and ISPs expand their throughput (IE, bandwidth a single moment in time - compared to data usage, bandwidth over time), the more channels, the faster the possible connection.

Buy a used DPC3010 from their approved modem list for $18. 8x4 bonding is plenty good enough for the foreseeable future. And, last I checked, this one supported their "ultimate tier" internet speeds.

Your internet is fine. It's their "new" high speed service that is bogging down because of your modem. Had the same issue. They kept suggesting it was my modem every time I called them. Even when there was an outage.

That is their excuse for everything if you don't have the 3.0 modem. It did make my service better, but connect problems still occur sometimes. The cox guy told me certain areas have grid problems and that has a lot to do with service issues.

I was specifically told don't buy a modem/router combo. I bought the white one that was $90 bucks at Walmart like one Cox guy recommended.
