I need to get a Landline for the house so my kid can call if he needs to etc

So should I just get Cox to hook a phone up with theier services ? Get a "House" Cell Phone ? or a Vonage or magic Jack type setup ?

Both of these services uses cellular service, not the internet. Costs less then $20 a month. Prepaid.
Make sure the respective cellular service works in your area! These are usually for minimal usage, based on minutes bought and number of days.

P.S. You can take these receivers with you anywhere they have reception and they will work as if you were home.

I never heard of these products but my dad being a South Central Bell/BellSouth vet (RIP) it just irks me to no end seeing cell service acting as a landline

This seems to backwards to me.

I feel your pain. Unfortunately, cell phones are putting land lines out of business. When was the last time you saw a pay phone?

Look into Ooma. Works though your internet. Pay for the hardware up front, then just pay taxes thereafter (unless you call international, which is still dirt cheap, or want extras ). I've had Ooma for over a year and I love it.

My Ooma bill is about $3.80 a month. Have had the service about a year. No complaints

How does it work if the power and/or internet goes out?

We have a landline using cordless phones (they don't work with no power) but we have a corded phone on one of the jacks that works no matter what. Saved us during a week long power outage due to a windstorm about 10 or so years ago. Unless Raccoons chew through the actual phone cable going into the house. Which they did a few months back. That stopped it for a day or two. Now it runs through a small PVC pipe that can't be chewed through. Something the phone dude hooked up.

Ooma refurb for $60 LINK

Thanks for the link! My Telo broke a long time ago and I was in no hurry to pay for a new one. Half price made it do-able.

Warning: I like NewEgg, but something was funky on one browser and it wouldn't let me check-out with the deal price. Tried a second browser and it went through at $59.99.

You have to go through the NeweggFlash website to get the deal price. the regular Newegg site had the full price.
