If you are anywhere near the $300 range, your best bet is to catch a dji phantom 3 standard. I think they have some refurb deals going from the company right now too.

I ended up getting him the one I linked in the OP. After about 15 minutes of flying one of the props quit turning. I sent it back yesterday and will look for another

I won't be getting rid of my Phantom anytime soon. It might be the coolest thing I've ever had.
I got the 3 standard because I didn't want to invest a lot into it. I'm not disappointed. I'm sure in a few years I'll want a better one.
