Looking for a software package that I can get for my high school son. He thinks he wants to go into mechanical engineering. Any advice, thanks in advance.

The Pirate Bay or you're shelling out thousands.

College students actually get 3 years of free Autodesk software use.
So either wait until he's in college or use the email of someone in college but not engineering.

Do the 30 day trial for him to see if he actually likes it. If he's at a school that teaches drafting they likely have partnered with Autodesk and he can get a free copy. If not, he will be able to get it free using his .edu email once he enrolls in college.
If you do the free trial and he decides he likes it and you want to go legit, I'd recommend LT since he's a beginner. Also, Autodesk is doing away with perpetual licensing so you'd have to purchase a subscription. They do have monthly and yearly options so maybe just get 6-8 months worth to tie him over until he can get it for free.
ETA: Just looked and they are having a cyber Monday sale for 50% off of a one year subscription. LT for $180 annual. Looks like they still have perpetual licenses available (I think January is when they make the full switch) but they aren't cheap.

I "found" Inventor and Solidworks online for free somewhere. Solidworks is much faster and easy to use
Eta: I can switch and use AutoCAD relatively smoothly, but I prefer Solidworks when modelling parts. AutoCAD Electrical and Revit are legit though

Go to there website then the student section fill out the questions and download. Just put what school he plans to attend. I did this as well being im in school however i use CAD all day at work. I just like to tinker with it at home while bored.
