I have had grandfathered ATT iPhones for quite a while. I currently have an employer provided iPhone as well and I'm opting out of my personal phone on 3/1 without an ETF (because they are increasing cost of grandfathered plan, so I can get out for free).

I've been happy with att but Verizon seems like a much better deal for 1 iPhone as that's all I have on the new plan.

Question is, after I leave ATT with first phone, I should be able to get ATT to unlock my phone. Can I in turn use that phone on Verizon network for my wife? If so, I could then have her ATT phone unlocked and sell it...correct?

I used an unlocked AT&T 6 plus on Verizon before I switched. Just do the unlock before you leave AT&T.

I should be able to get the first phone unlocked because I will still have an ATT account for the other phone. The second phone will be tougher, bc cancelling it will end my account.

I don't think they will just unlock them now as they are still under contract.

Depends on what you mean by under contract. If you got the phone as part of a contract and are still under the original terms of the contract (paid x dollars for the phone less than full cash price for the phone and signed a set time contract) there is a subsidy fee as part of that contract. If you terminate early you'll either owe the remaining cost of the phone or have to turn it in. Or you nay have simply finance the phone as part f your contract, in which case you'll have to pay out the contract. In either case, if you pay out the phone, the phone is yours and they should unlock it then.

If, however, you're still under the plan from your original contract but the original term has expired and you haven't upgraded, you should own the phone and they should unlock it for you when you go in to terminate your service,

Thanks for the insight.

I did receive a subsidized phone, but as the rate is set to increase on my UDP on 3/1, I can leave without an ETF.

VZW made it seem like I could walk into their store with an ATT phone (unlocked or not) and it would work on their network. It seems like I will need ATT to unlock it first.

Do you have any friends with Verizon? You can try to put their SIM card in your phone to see if it will work.

You should have done this on 2/20 if you didn't

Verizon was giving 650 dollar credits for trading in iPhone 6 or newer towards a new phone
