My Yamaha CDC-697 carousel player recently somehow AGAIN dislodged a disc from the tray and no amount of shaking would release it. Had to open the thing and pry the disc out and apparently this action caused a problem with the cheap plastic gears w/in the unit. Now, my back-up Denon DCD1420 is skipping like a mother&^$%#)....will a blast of compressed air have a chance of "cleaning" the laser eye ? Does anyone still look at repairing these units OR are they all just buy/replace ?
Any advice would be appreciated !

No, they are not all junk--as with all things, you get what you pay for..

What is your budget?

I have 3 CD players. I am also an avid audiophile.

The first is my reference player--a Simaudio Supernova ($5800). It plays regular CDs only. It weighs 55 pounds and has operated flawlessly for 6 years. It carries a 20 year warranty.

Here is the Simaudio...

The next is a 13 year old Sony 777ES that was around $1300 new back in the day. It operates flawlessly and sounds better than almost any sub $500 player made today.

Regarding the above 2--you get what you pay for. There is a huge difference ibetween a cheap CD player and a well built one. It has to do with the transport (the part that spins and reads), and the chipset. The fact that they still work beautifully after all those years says something about the build quality. The Sony player is also a heavy piece of gear.

The third is a fantastic bang for the buck--the Oppo 103--it plays every type of disc known to mankind and also has a DAC built in. You can run a computer into it and it will decode in hi-rez (up to DSD)...it is around $500. This player is current production.

If that is still above your budget, look into some of the newer Marantz, NAD, and Cambridge Audio players. Try Audio Advisor or Music Direct.

You realize that's a big no no and probably the issue, right?

Yes, I'm fully aware that "shaking" any electronic equipment, especially with moving components, is not recommended...LOL
However, given the alternative of taking apart the unit, to disengage the occasional jammed disc, lite shaking DID work and taking it apart did not ! It's simply a fault of the crappy design of most of the carousel/tray systems ! It will be back to a single play unit for me !

Thanks....not about to drop $500+ for an outdoor patio/bar CD player. Using my old Harmon Kardon gear to power/operate the outdoor sound system and will look into the snigle disc play Marantz or other. Thanks for your advice !

They sound better than MP3s and are safer to mess with in the car.

Vinyl sounds even better.

A peripheral glimpse is all it takes to grab the right cd. Everyone I know who plays iPhone music in the car has to focus harder on the smaller screen not just to see the song they want, but to aim the finger or thumb to the touchscreen. Almost like texting.

As far as hearing the difference in formats...the brightness in CD music is clear to me. Only DVD-Audio or BD music might sound better than vinyl. CD music is harsh to me.

would you ascribe this to an MP3 problem or a UI issue with the phone?

its borderline criminal that both apple & android devices dont go into 'automobile mode' when you're driving and provide simplified access to music and calling.

its a fricking joke the only cars with the 'apple auto' hardware are ferraris.

its almost 2016 and yet both google and apple are dragging their arse on this.

google had an auto mode out years ago and took it away.

With what DAC? I'm sure the Simaudio has a super nice one in it, albeit limited to redbook quality. My external DAC is similarly limited, though nowhere near as amazing as the one connected to that transport.

You could take it to the A/V place on Sherwood and they could look at it for you. They may even have some in store that you could buy.
