Apple confirmed earlier this month that it is driving vehicles around the world to collect data to improve Apple Maps, and the mapping imagery is almost certainly being used to create a Google Maps "Street View" competitor. Apple Maps vehicles are also taking photos of businesses and storefronts in major metropolitan areas to replace current imagery provided by third-party sources such as Yelp.

Apple has also updated its Apple Maps vehicles website with a new list of locations where it will be collecting data between July 1 to July 14, with notable additions including New Orleans and unmapped areas in Santa Clara County

Is this where all the Apple lovers praise Apple's innovation for coming up with this brilliant idea ?

I have no qualms with Apple taking a good idea and making it smoother and implementing it better. That said, trying to recreate Google Maps seems like a gigantic waste of time and resources to improve something that few people have any issues with.
As someone mentioned, Google Maps may be the most beneficial free product of all time.

Freedom isn't free.

The crazy thing to me is that people are bitching at Apple ever since Apple Maps started up because they're nixing Google out of the process. Well where do you think Google makes their money? Data mining. So wouldn't you think Apple might eventually want to scoop up some of that potential money via data mining with competing products on its phones, which it can implement and integrate into its UI and hardware experience fairly well?
I digress.
What I'm impressed with is how quickly Apple's come up to speed with their mapping. It took Google a long time to get here, and I don't think anyone will say with a straight face Apple is on their level. But they have come a long, long way in a very short period of time.

So will there be imagery from inside the potholes?

I agree with this. However,

I also agree with this. As superfluous as it seems from the consumer's point of view, Apple is still a direct competitor to Google, and this is just another effort in furthering independence from the competitor that will likely be a profitable move. They don't even have to outdo Google here. Apple's native map app is already there on the iPhone. Apple merely has to take away any compelling reason to use something else.

This is one of those things where I wish Apple would just do what Apple does and let Google do what they do.
Apple and Google are the best at what they do but rather than just complementing each other they seem to be obsessed with getting good at what the other company has mastered.
Apple is a great at hardware and operating systems for their hardware. Google is great at services.
Anytime either company gets outside of those areas to get into the other's territory, it seems forced and trepidatious.
I don't need street view from Apple. We already have it.

They tried that, then Google released Android. And I wouldn't call Android forced and trepidatious.
