It's a beautiful day

"Gross, free music I don't have to listen to just magically appeared on my $700 pocket computer. Life is the worst."- iPhone Users this week

goddamn this is the VERY DEFINITION of first world problems

I guess they finally found what they're looking for.

To be fair, it takes up space, and downloading it consumes bandwidth. What if it was music or an artist you personally considered "gross"? It was a mistake to push it. A lot of users finally found what they were looking for today.
In the wake of The Fappening, this would seem to confirm Apple's new mission is to embarrass celebrities.

Good. They shouldn't have done an automatic download in the first place. Not everyone is a U2 fan.

Definitely, but I imagine it was a requirement of the deal. The last thing you want if you're U2 is nobody downloading your album for free because so many people have moved on from iTunes.

It's in the cloud. At least on my phone and two macs it is. It shows up in my library, but it will only download when I play it.

Some good comments from Macrumors:
"Just wait... the largest album rollout ever becomes the most deleted album ever."
"The album is so terrible it should be considered malware."

Rather than letting customers choose to download the album on their own, however, Apple pushed it to iTunes accounts, causing some devices to automatically download the album without explicit user permission.

Exactly. Apple shouldn't have done it, but for Christ sakes they're giving away free music. I wonder how many people actually listened to it before getting all pissy?
I'll withhold my faux outrage for something a little less trivial.

I'm sure those were the ones that have automatic downloads enabled. So yes, they did give permission.

"If someone walked into my house and took a crap on my kitchen table, I'd be ungrateful too."

Who cares if it's free, doesn't mean I want it on my phone. Bet if this were a Kanye album a lot you saying "but but it's free" would be signing a different tune.

Users enable automatic downloads, album gets automatically downloaded, users gather pitchforks. This is the biggest non story of the month.
Posted on 9/15/14 at 2:13 pm to colorchangintiger
In fairness, people only automatically download what they opted to buy in the first place. In this case, something was essentially "purchased" for them.

It feels like an episode of Sweet Sixteen where the girl gets a Lexus SUV and bitches her parents out because it's not the Mercedes SUV she wanted.

How is this a non-story? How is what Apple did any different from carriers and others installing bloatware on Android devices? Would you have the same reaction if Apple pushed some rap or country music album, which is not everybody's cup of tea, to your device? How do you assume U2 is universally liked by everyone? The truth remains that Apple screwed up. No need to defend their every move. Don't blame the users for having automatic downloads enabled. How the hell would people know that Apple is pushing some stupid-arse album to their devices if they hadn't watched the keynote? Come on man...

Yeah, this isn't anything like that at all....because nobody asked for this U2 album. It was just pushed to people whether they wanted it or not.
