Looking at this laptop for my dad. He works at home and uses office products and surfs the web. Not much more than that. I want to get him a computer with an SSD and decent Ram out of the box and not hassle with replacing the HD for a SSD. This has a 256 SSD and 8gd of ram. Has a 3rd gen I5. Would this be a good buy for me? I know the Latitude is Dells business machine and the chassis is metal not the typical cheap Dell plastic. Any opinions on this?

I always recommend, and have purchased for myself, Dell Latitude and Precision laptops. The quality is worth the extra cost. Rocking a E6540 now.

Only thing about the laptop is it has a 3rd gen I5 but he will never know the difference. He just wants one that is fast(hence the SSD and 8gd of ram).

Good laptop, good deal. The CPU is probably a little faster than the common i5s in today's laptops (the low-power U-series), though as stated it's not important.

id try and find a precision m series. we use latitudes and precisions and the precisions seem to be much more hardy and last longer.

It sure does. I'm seeing it for 319.99 with free shipping actually. Damn good deal. 1-year warranty, might even have a new battery.

One on Amazon is the 5430 and has the lower screen resolution. Not sure what else is different.

Oh yeah, you're right about the model number. But I don't see the 6430's resolution listed on newegg. According to Dell, it could have a 1366x768 or 1600x900 display. Both laptops are good deals either way.

According to Q&A on NewEgg they say it is the 1600x900 resolution. Would there be much of a diffrence between that and the 1366x768 to a normal everyday person?

Honestly, I don't know if you'd notice a difference, but I'd gravitate toward the higher resolution anyway.

EDIT: I have a 17" 1600x900 laptop and find the resolution to be a little crippling nowadays, so I'm betting it's closer to ideal for 14".
