Get rid of all the crap channels that come pre-loaded on it and then start judiciously adding the channels you will actually watch. Keep Hulu, Netflix and Amazon if you subscribe to any of them.
In addition to the channels listed on the Roku channel menu there are several hundred private or hidden channels that can be added manually. You can google to find a list.
The only "apps" are several media players that let you access media on your network or on a USB flash drive.
Note: I have three Roku 2s, the previous generation, but I'm not aware of any significant changes with the Roku 3.

Being able to delete crap and customize the interface along with Full Search, gives Roku 3 the win over the other pretenders.
And that's coming from a Fire TV owner.

Semi related question, I'm just realizing that I can watch home movies via roku. First I was dropping them on an external hd but then I read about plex. Plex seems legit but it buffers a lot. Roku and computer via wifi. Files are pretty big and recorded as avchd. Any way to prevent buffering.
System is roku 3, fairly new computer, and brand new router that per my tech friends if near top of the line.

I had buffering issues on my Roku in the beginning. I hooked up an ethernet cable to it and now it works flawlessly. My brother had issues along these lines as well, he did the same thing and his problems seem to be fixed as well.

If you're using wireless, probably not. Hi-def video files require a lot of bandwidth which you won't get with the single antenna wireless N receiver built into the Roku. You would probably have better results with a direct ethernet connection. You can also put the video on a flash drive and plug that directly into the Roku.

Ok, thanks.
I'm about to build a small computer/mail nook in my house so I'll plan on dropping Ethernet to hook directly to my router and I'll also run one to my roku as well.

Check your router to see if it supports gigabit ethernet. If not, get an external gigabit switch so that your internal traffic, i.e., from your server to the Roku, is not limited to the max speed of the switch built into the router. You can get a small 5-port gigabit switch for under twenty bucks on Amazon.
Edited: The Roku 3 does not have gigabit ethernet but a gigabit switch is still a good idea for those internal devices that support it.

Preferred Internet service (50mbs on Cox), good modem, and a dual band AC router should help. That's what I run...Roku is on my 5mhz wifi and it rarely has buffer issues.
