any recommendations for a 7" android tablet?

I was hoping to grab the new Nexus 7 next month, but it doesn't appear to be launching anytime soon. I mainly want an e-reader that I can watch netflix and google play movies without needing to be rooted. I own the original nook color which, I had some fun back in the day installing custom roms on it, but it's old and slow. The wife has a kindle fire, but I want something that will allow google play movies/tv shoes b/c I can download them and watch them on a plane or in the car without using cell data. Any suggestions?

I've had the nexus 7 for several years. Love it.

I heard good things. I plan to keep my tablet for a while so I don't want to buy something released 3 years ago.

This is kind of the same thing for me as the Nexus 7. If I'm not mistaken, I think this tablet has been out for a while and only runs kit kat.

I use an LG GPad in my car for IHeart/Waze/Podcast. You can find the AT&T unlocked version for about $100 all over the place online.
If all you're planning on using it for is an e-reader/movie player, then you shouldn't worry about getting something that's been out for a couple of years. Spend $100 this year, then another $100 a couple of years from now, and you'll come out cheaper than spending $300 or more now.
