Last year Home Depot had a good Cree sale on Earth Day only. I am hoping for a repeat this year.

Anyone see any deals?

Lowes has Sylvania LEDs for 10% off until the 27th.

These tcp lights are as cheap as I've seen them in awhile. They were getting close to $50 a 6 pack when I wanted to pick up another pack a couple months ago.

Have y'all found a good white/daylight color? I don't like the yellow or blue tints some of these bulbs produce. One of my recessed lights went out so I'm going to go ahead and replace them all with LEDs.

The question I have always had is if I purchased these, replacing all of the bulbs in my house, would the savings outweigh the cost?

Or would they burn out after 6 months of use?

i bought all 'tw' series 6" CREE recessed light housing/bulb combos for $19 each.

they look fantastic & work with my rotary dimmer switches.

NOTE the 'tw' series is a pure sealed bulb whereas the uglier older 'non tw' series has a couple of little 'clips' on either side of the bulb. (see below..this is the older model) they are typically next to each other and you have to look close to make sure you're getting the newer model..they are the same price.

just look for 'tw'; they should be next to the others.

the 'tw' stands for 'true white' and is a higher true white (by candle light standards) so thats the CREE you want anyway.

and hey...22year lifespan

eta just dont forget to 'extend' those 3 little metal legs before popping it in. those are designed to grab the can housing. if you dont extend them, they wont properly 'snap' to the ceiling.

to take them out, just rotate the light and the legs will automatically fold so taking light in and out is simple.

the instructions dont explain this which is dumb. not everyone is a can-light install expert. 2 sentences on the packaging would have saved me alot of headache the first time i put one in.

considering they 60w bulb uses about $1 of electricity A YEAR, i'd say.

also check wired for a discussion about how dimming the bulbs DOES use less electricity and dispells the myth that the usage is redirected as HEAT in the switch..so if you don't use them at full brightness..cost is even less although at like 8/9 cent a month who the frick cares anymore.

or 22 years, whatever comes first.

CREE guarantees theirs for 10 years so there's that.

Ahead of Earth Day, Philips has partnered with The Home Depot for the new $5 LED light bulb.

The Philips LED A19, which uses just 8.5 watts of power, is available now to purchase online (or it was until it sold out), and will hit brick-and-mortar Home Depot shelves in early May as a 90-day, two-for-one promotional pack.

In the long run, Philips' 60-watt LED will cost about $1.02 per year to run, saving more $62 more over the life of the bulb compared with traditional incandescents, the company said.

CAREFUL on that PHILIPS.

Buzzing LEDs are fricking annoying and add to that the shitty warranty (3 years) and lifetime rating at less than 1/2 of the CREE (plus worse CRI) and you get a pretty shitty bulb (even with the intro '2 for 1' deal)

As for CRI, closer to 100 is better:

NEW Philips 60w| CRI - 80
TCP $4.88 60w | CRI - 83
CREE $7.97 4FLOW 60w | CRI - 80
CREE $9.97 TW 60w | CRI - 93

CREE TW bulbs (you have to pay a bit more) carry both CREE's legendary 10 year warranty and are closer to 100 on the CRI scale.

I'm not saying buy a CREE, I'm saying don't jump on a shitty LED deal just because you think all LEDs are pretty much the same these days.

Paying $5+ for a bulb is a fricking INVESTMENT so get the right bulb the first time if you plan on not changing it for the next decade.

The rare earth element neodymium is added to the glass of our Cree TW Series LED bulbs to augment the LED light. This creates a “spectural notch,” allowing the LED light passing through the glass to show colors that are true and natural.

I am about to buy a bunch of new bulbs. About 2 years ago, I replaced the indoor can floods with LEDs I got from a local electric supply house and they weren't cheap--about $28 apiece--but it was worth that to not have to keep pulling out the ladder every 3 weeks to change shitty bulbs. I did 10 of them.

The light was very sterile compared to what was in there prior, but I eventually got used to it. The plus--haven't pulled the ladder out once since replacing!

I now am looking to do the entire house...lamps, chandeliers, bathroom fixtures, etc., as I am just tired of constantly changing crappy bulbs out. I need to find something that isn't as Daylight or White for those fixtures. I will also need to find a good 3-way for the lamps and something that emits in a radiant pattern and not a direct beam for the lamps.

Any suggestions? (I don't mind spending money if it is for a better quality product).

If I remember correctly, the ones I bought a couple years ago were made by Satco.

Did you not read either of my posts in this thread?

Cree is the answer if you want it done right. TW series gives you the best warm yellow light.

What size cans? I did about 10 6" cans in my house using those listed above and they are nothing short of spectacular.

Eta best part is you can get them locally from home depot and if you don't like them or there is a problem.. Just take it back.

I only have a few cans left to do. My main concern is the fixtures and lamps. I will check out the Cree tomorrow.

I was actually asking for suggestions with the way the light is dispersed--I should have made that clear.

LEDs can be a very sweet solution to the shitty CFLs that were forced on us for a couple decades but I hate to see people jumping on these cheap deals like that really awful philips led.

Look at
- CRI score
- color temperature
- expected life
-warranty
-dimability
- if they buzz
- does light project in 360 degrees?

A good deal of tech has to go into making something look like the simple bulb Thomas Edison invented over 100 years ago.

What do you think of the new design of the CREE 4Flow lights? I'm not impressed with them. at all. I guess the price is better because they were able to ditch the heat sinks with the convection cooling design, but they are less efficient and do NOT carry the 10 year warranty. that concerns me.

everything you just said.

if you are willing to pay $2 less for all the compromises you just listed for something that could be lighting your living room lamp until 2037 thats just ignorance.

the good news is if you made that mistake, you can always bring them back to home depot and get a store credit towards a better cree.

I've stuck pretty diligently to OSRAM. The only time I think I would get CREE instead is with their tw series, which I did get for the pot lights in the basement.

At the very least it is good to see some nice, consistent products start to come out of this technology at a price that everyday people can start to entertain. Even my wife no longer bitches about spending extra on these bulbs, and she is normally a very... very late entrant.
