Hypothetical. I've always wondered.

You dont use a VPN. You download something from a hosted site.

How does the your ISP know if it's illegally downloaded or not?

Seems like it would take more than one single download?

I'm curious about this too. I have 3 firesticks and last week decided to nerd up and see what all this jailbreaking mess was all about. I took 1 of the sticks and followed instructions I found on a YouTube video and managed to load kodi and exodus on it. It is fanfrickingtastic but now I'm reading online that if I don't get a vpn I'll end up in angola. Is it really necessary and will a vpn slow me down too much to be able to stream video without a lot of buffering? I feel like an old fart that just got his first computer. Lol

VPN encrypts the traffic and shows a different ip (aka not yours) while you access the internet. This includes downloads (you should be using a VPN with high encryption). This way your ISP doesn't see the traffic from your actual ip.

So is a VPN just good to have all around? Are all VPNs monthly fees?

PIA only charges around $36 a year for VPN access (using a discount code). Well worth it.

The way you typically get caught is that you download something that is copyrighted, then it becomes available for others to download from you. The owner of the copyright will search and find that it is available from your ip address. The owner will then contact your service provider to ask them who had that ip address at that time. That's when you get a nasty warning letter.

If you use a VPN, the ip address that the owner finds won't be your actual ip address that you get from your service provider. They won't know who to contact.

Now, if your ISP is being proactive instead of reactive, then they are watching what ip addresses you go to and the amount of bandwidth downloaded from each ip address. They will have a list of suspicious ip addresses, and flag anyone with large amounts of downloads from them. In that case, all your ISP will see is up/download amounts between you and the VPN.

the ISP has alot of different ways of detecting what you are doing. protocols, ports in use, etc etc.

How would you use this service for a fire tv? I see you can run it on Mac, windows but no android. Would I have to set it up on my router?

I see android link. I'll see if I can pull up the app or have to use ES Explorer to get to google play
