Has any super google users got an Alexa device (Echo, Tap, Dot) and would like to share if they are missing anything that google home could provide?

I'm trying to decide if I should wait for Google Home or just go ahead and get an Alexa device. I hate that Alexa has no interaction with google play music.

Does it not work even through something like IFTTT?

No IFTTT channel but you can set up tasker to play Gmusic.

I probably won't get around to playing with Alexa until my dot comes in so I don't know how much of a pain it will be but I can let you know around Halloween. However, I have set up Wink tasker triggers with no issues and it looks like I only have a little tweaking to integrate it with Alexa.

I've only scratched the surface with Tasker. Could I control something like alarm.com and control my locks, temperature and alatm? Alexa has that as a skill.

I haven't found anything about a tasker plugin for the alarm.com app, however I just found this.

quote:

Find the app "Intent Intercept" on Google Play. Install it, launch it and switch it to "on". Then click on your widget that you normally click to start Sonos. Intent Intercept should show you the details of the intent that is sent to Android when you click your widget. This should give you some more info about how to replicate the widget click from Tasker. Tom

If you can create widgets from the alarm.com app to place on the screen you can set triggers in tasker using the information from the Intent Intercept app. This is all just regarding my android phone, I would think (hope) google home is gonna handle all of this without much effort.

No offense. Longtime iOS user here. But it seems Alexa is far more simplistic than the Google Option.

I think Amazon wins this fight. They've been at it and collected mountains worth of data already from Echo, Dot, Tap, etc. So much so that they have already come out with a new iteration of their low-end devices and been able to slash prices on them.

That alone is going to put a ton of pressure on Google's offering from a price point perspective IMO. Sure you can buy top of the line and get an Echo for $179. But you can also do everything an Echo does for $49 right now.

But the real win for Amazon is that they're already selling all the devices they work with flawlessly. Look at those bundles that are/aren't/are being sold this morning. Google simply doesn't have a similar compelling model to integrate the whole-home ala an Amazon with Alexa devices, streaming music services, CDN's, smart home devices and other value added services they bring to the table with Prime.

They may both be playing Chess, but Amazon has a huge, huge advantage in the game IMO.

i didn't quite understand everything you were saying but it seems you indicated that google doesn't have a stream music service.

I'm not aware of any smart home devices that would only work with alexa. Can you explain that further?

As of right now I'm sure an Echo, fire tv or one of my firesticks could probably do most of the things I already do by saying "OK, Google" on my phone. I'll let you know in about a month when the dot comes in but with tasker integration I'll have the ability to do more than Alexa on her own. Home hasn't come out yet so of course they are going to be behind, but I think it has the potential to catch up quickly with community support.

the main problem with tasker is it will drain the bejeesus out of your phone battery. i gave up on it.

I've never had a battery drain issue with tasker. The only thing that really seems to drain my phone is one of those battle strategy games and streaming music to my BT headphones.

I mean that it's provided all as a part of Prime. But I'm also talking about the devices it controls. Google doesn't have a massive marketplace built in to sell not only its own devices but the IoT devices that can be automated and controlled for use within your home using their own particular branded devices and tech built into said devices.

Alexa/Prime can check the weather while playing your playlist but quickly order paper towels and adjust your thermostat. The thermostat and paper towels are hooked into Amazon's retail marketplace and work seamlessly. Google doesn't have the same integration of services in my opinion.

Where will you buy the thermostat that works with Google Home at? Amazon more than likely. Other places will sell them as well but will you be able to tell Google Home, "Buy a Thermostat from Eccobee," or, "Buy Phillips Hue Light Bulbs,"?

I'm not sure how that will work but I do know it's fairly simple to do on Amazon devices.

I guess my point is that Amazon's been at it longer, poured more money into Alexa and had it in the wild working longer than Google's offering, and has a marketplace to sell stuff for the home that Google doesn't have the ability to conjure up out of thin air to compare to Amazon's and yet Google will on some level have to interface with (leaving Amazon out for users to buy stuff would be a mistake for Home IMO).

out of all of that all i got was you wont be able to order things from amazon directly by speaking to google home. which i don't disagree with, i just dont think that is a big deal at all. The market for buying things sight unseen is so low it's barely a blip on anyone's radar.

and that amazon has been at it longer. pretty captain obvious statement since google is announcing a launch.

I'm scared to order sight unseen. I can know that I want it but I'm scared it might get sent to the wrong address or it recognized some other item that likes to put popular names in the title to get hits

i love my Echo, and I just ordered a Dot but the thought of Google Now in a home assistant is pretty fricking appealing.

I wouldn't worry about that with amazon. Last week I had put a phone in my cart and apparently pocket ordered it later that day. Started a chat with amazon and they emailed me a free return shipping label.

only thing i order on a regular basis sight unseen is detergent with an amazon dash button. I can see it benig used for regular items like detergent, deodorant, air freshener, etc.

A thermostat...no chance in hell someone is ordering a thermostat through an assistant.

Sight unseen purchases aren't a big deal? Yeah, Amazon Dash buttons have been total failures I guess?

I have a printer with Dash capability so that my business never stalls. I have everything from Toilet Paper to Dishwashing detergent to laundry detergent set up on Dash. After 5 seconds of setup of the buttons I have been buying sight unseen for months now.

That you don't think it's that big of a deal comes off as either uninformed or disingenuous for the purposes of the discussion. But site unseen buying is occurring in personal and business setting use cases on a large scale for awhile now, and Google doesn't have the marketplace to monetize this nor even the technology to enable its users to do it.

Is there anything that Google Home will be able to do that Amazon Alexa enabled devices do not or will not? I'm genuinely curious because I've kept up with Apple and Amazon closely but with Google I have not to be honest.
