Starting physical therapy school in September and I need a new laptop. What's the best brand for my dollar. MacBook? What are some less expensive brands that will last and not give me any issues???

Surface Pro 4. Bought one today with the keyboard - great versatility. Overall okay tablet/great laptop. Could never imagine using it as a tablet anyway so that's okay. Would recommend.

MacBook is fine if you are comfortable with the OS. If you aren't, look for something with at least 8 GB of RAM, a solid state hard drive, and an i5 Pentium processor or better.

Storage space on your disk drive really isn't that important these days with cheap cloud solutions and external options.

Beyond that, it really depends on what you want out of the graphics as far as cost.

i'd take a look at the dell xps13. i love that size for portability, and it's more bang for buck than a macbook. i personally own a macbook. it's very old now and i rarely use it, but i loved it when i used it. i suggest going to best buy or somewhere similar and playing around with one to see if you prefer the OS. if you are heavy in the apple ecosystem (iphone, ipad, apple tv) you may appreciate having a mac. if not, you'll get more specs for money with pc. that xps13 was $800 on amazon the other day and is a beautiful machine

eta this is the dell LINK

I have 30 days to return the SP4 to Best Buy - looks like I'll be doing that when the SP5 is released in June

I just bought a new laptop. For clarity, I already had an MBP I was replacing and a SP3.

Looked primarily at:

MBP - Expensive, redesign coming shortly. It's a great computer, but a little more than I wanted to spend and I wanted to try something new.

12 inch retina MacBook (what I bought) - Loved the screen and size. Had experienced some eyestrain with my 13inch MBP but haven't noticed any on this, perhaps due to the far better display. Has enough power to handle everything I've thrown at it. Play with keyboard for a while (30 minutes+) before buying.

Dell XPS 13 - Hard to find. Prices varied a lot and I think the opinions of the multiple versions varied as well. I couldn't find as much solid info as I wanted to put down 700-1200 dollars. It was a nice machine from what I could see, but in that price range there was no reason for me not to stick with Apple.

Surface Book - Mixed reviews. Cool concept, and I liked the SP3 ok, but you really need to mess with the surfaces to see if you can use them as your primary laptop. Plenty of people do, but I found myself reaching for my MBP all the time, it was just much nicer to use for practically any task. Book would probably make a fine everyday laptop (better than the pro), but a lot of the reviews said it was quirky.

HP Spectre with the bling - It's expensive, looks ridiculous, and had no obvious advantages over anything else.

i'd feel pretty comfortable buying the one i linked given amazon's stellar return policy. i do see this problem with most pc's though - there are so many versions out there, you have to spend some time to make sure you're getting what you are looking for.

Assuming you're neither of those, I say sp or one of the new xps's if you want a laptop that's not a hybrid.

I used to be a Lenovo ho, but I can't honestly recommend it at this point.

Read an article last night saying it could be pushed back to October. Might need to return it, then buy it again a week later
