LINK

Posting in case this affects anyone here. Posted on /.

Not good. Anyone who used their online store from May 2015 to last month has had their names, addresses, card numbers, etc. exposed.

I've seen them outperform/outlast several "brand name" computers, that use the same parts an Acer does...

What I want to know is why aren't we moving to card tokenization like Apple pay uses, where the merchant is given a disposable number and not the actual credit card so having your credit card "number" breached isn't a big deal. Although using the same password on every site will still be a problem for most.

Visa is doing something like that with Visa Checkout. The merchant has to support it though.

Virtual account numbers have been a thing for a while. I recall using Citi VAN at least a decade ago. It was just never popularized or inherent in online transactions. Even knowing that I have the option, I often forget to use it unless I'm buying from a new-ish site with little or no reputation. My main credit card doesn't have that option though.

Acer revealed that names, addresses, payment card numbers, card expiration dates and card security codes may have been accessed by the hackers but, following investigations by internal and external professionals, believes login details were not compromised.

They have all of your personal and payment information, including security codes, but your login info is fine.

I get login info being safe is good because people so often use the same password, but that wording is weird.
