I am ready to upgrade my receiver (currently Pioneer elite), and I am researching the following items (I am running Paradigms):

-Yamaha RX A3060
-Denon 4300
-Denon 6300
-Denon 7300
-Marantz SR 7011
-Anthem MRX 1120

From what I gather, Denon and Marantz (same company?) both eliminated the front wides from their new units. All they offer now are front highs. Is this accurate?

Yamaha has "front presence," so I am not sure what exactly this means. Can it be calibrated as either high or wide? I used to have a Yamaha Rx series that I bought in '08, and it was a beast. I am currently leaning towards this unit, but I am open to any of them as long as it has the power and functionality to play a full 9.1 or 11.1 setup (meaning I would ideally like to run front wide or both wide and high).

Anthem appears to also only offer front highs.

It appears the front wides are being phased out? I am confused, because I have come to understand that the wide is more important than the high. Am I wrong on this one? I am someone who loves a great sound stage; however, I am as novice as it comes to the knowledge of the details.

Thumbs up for some nice gear being considered.

For what it's worth, I'm really happy with my few year old Yamaha Aventage RX-A820

Greatest sound I've gotten out of my Klipsch speakers has been with my Marantz sr5005. Currently own an Onkyo and have had a Denon. Don't know about the sound from a Yamaha. I'm sure the Anthem sound great too.

I can't answer the sound stage as I usually go 2.1, 3.1 or 5.1 only.

I really like my Marantz NR 1607 but you are in a higher league than me.

I bought the Marantz SR5009 refurbished and have been very pleased. Replaced an older Harman Kardon and the Marantz is much better in features and sound quality.

My old Yamaha Rx definitely pushed cleaner sound than my current Pioneer Elite, so I am leaning back to this. Only reason I changed was due to it not supporting 3D passthrough.

The Marantz is pulling a strong second though. I am reading good things about it. Again, my main concern is the lack of front wides, but it is appearing that none of these offer that. I could be completely misreading things, however. It's why I am hoping someone here would know about it and could help inform me of this.

Denon sounds great too. Really they all do, and in the end it may very well be a splitting of hairs in determining which is the right buy. I am sure I will be happy with any of them.

I'm not an expert, but I assume it's due to the Dolby Atmos format which places sounds above where you sit.

Have you ever thought about getting a surround processor and a multichannel Class A amplifier. You'll get better results than buying receivers like that with tons of features and poorer quality amplification. Rotel, NAD, Krell, Simaudio...

I don't disagree but now you are talking some bucks.

NAD and Rotel, which both can be scooped up on the used market, aren't the investment of Krell or Simaudio, but damn those two are drool worthy.

Looks like OP wants Atmos 7.1.4. Only Rotel product that can do that is the RAP-1580, which is $3800.

Nad would only do ATMOS with the $5500 M17 coupled with the $700 AM17 module.

Actually anything over 7.1 is new to me, so I'm not sure exactly what I want. 7.1 was the available format when I last purchased a receiver, so what I know now is simply what I have been reading the last few days. I am not steadfast on any one particular setup; rather, I am looking to find what is the best.

Now that it goes up to 11.1 I am really at a loss. I have read that the front wides are better than the front highs, and that's why I am looking for input from you guys. If ATMOS is the new big deal, does that mean the highs are actually better?

Tell me more. I did just find the Rotel RAP-1580 online, and it seems to max out at 7.1.4. How are the others? I am not opposed to spending 4K if the system is powerful and forward thinking enough to last me quite a few years. Since 11.1 is the newest setup, is this antiquated?

Convince me to buy one of these units, and if you have time explain why they are different than the others I listed.

I think I am starting to understand this better now, and this makes more sense. Plus regarding the 7.1.4 that bus pointed out, that appears to be the latest setup which works best. Or am I misunderstanding altogether? I really should've been keeping up with this for the last few years rather than trying to catch up all at once right now.

I think my system supports 7.1, but I'm just doing 5.1 and still sounds great to me. I'm sure there are improvements with more speakers, but don't know if they are significant or not.

Dolby Atmos is intriguing because of the placing sounds above you. I just read there are Dolby Atmos enabled speakers which fire upward to bounce sound off the ceiling.

My next upgrade will be to my front 3 speakers. I've been wanting to get some Martin Logan ESL speakers.

I am currently leaning towards the Denon 4300 and running 7.1 for the time being. I am moving into a rental for 3 years due to commute circumstances, so I won't be running the Atmos until my house is built in 2020. The 4300 is cheaper than the others, and I can buy a powerful amp when I am ready to extend the x4300 from a 9.1 to 11.1 (thus creating the 7.1.4 Atmos setup). This also sets me up to buy the same level receiver for future upgrades rather than keep buying the flagship, since I will have the amp to push the extra channels.

I am still not 100% sold on this, because I may setup the Atmos in the rental. Yes, that Atmos immersion seems truly badass.
