Why? Moto X is the better phone for just 100 more bucks. Why buy old tech? Better camera, smaller footprint with same large screen, better outdoor viewing (LCD vs amoled) SD card, better processor, fully customizable, etc. The nexus 6 is still a good phone with pure android, but it has its downfalls too.

That's a steal, if I was actually considering upgrading to the Nexus 6P in a few weeks this would suck though, driving the price down even more to resell.

Because some people are on a budget. $100 at that price point constitutes a 33% more expensive phone.
$299 for a 32GB N6 is a freaking steal

If you are on a budget, you shouldn't be spending 299 on a phone anyway.
