The only reason black face was racist was because it meant that people thought blacks weren't qualified to play themselves in productions. Just dressing up as a black person and using blackface is not racist by the words definition. However as a rule of thumb, never paint your baby.

In many cases, yes, this was unfortunately the case. Not always though.

What? That's not the reason they used black face... obviously they probably had many characters who were "black" in the context of the play be negative characters due to the misguided perception of them in the day, but they didn't use black face to say stupid, they used black face to remind the audience of a black person which then relies on what the audience already thinks about black people (which might in fact be stupid and slow at that time)

what???

black face was used to portray negative and untrue representations of black people back then. Especially the way they talked and carried themselves. Black face was primarily used in comedies.

Discussing racism on this board is a lost cause. For some reason people think implicit racism isn't a thing.

Im aware that implicit racism is a thing. I dont think every case of blackface is implicit racism.

lol yes, but you're skipping quite a few steps by just saying what you said above. It's not quite that simple.
