WSJ: US Soccer Could Use a Good Crisis

LINK

Columnist Matthew Futterman purports that the US failing to qualify for the next World Cup would ultimately result in a long term net gain for the Federation.

I couldn't agree any less. Still, an interesting take.

Yea....that would be great for US Soccer. Right.

His argument fails to mention that most of the other countries that went through a "crisis" didn't have other major sports competing inside that nation.

Sure, a "football" crisis in England or France is a major deal to their respective fanbases, but here in the US it would barely register as a blip on the national radar. Most people have too many other sports to follow with NFL, NBA, College football to really care about the USMNT team, unless they are WINNING.

Also, failing to qualify out of UEFA is a little more understandable than failing to advance out of CONCACAF.

But I do agree that JK came to shake down the system here in the US...meaning the veterans will probably not be part of his greatest teams.

Professional troll job by the WSJ. There's no way Futterman believes anything he typed out last night.
