So the joint US/messyco/Canada bid released a preliminary list of potential host cities and sites. LINK

New Orleans is on the list!

New Orleans is a pipe dream for hosting a world cup match.

I imagine that they will lean toward sites with real turf rather than artificial.

It almost feels wrong that my first World Cup game will probably be in the USA.

Feels less authentic than it would in an actual soccer-crazed country.

I feel the same way. Always been a dream to make a World Cup game, but this is not how I imagined it.

Of course, but it has been done in 1994 in Detroit.

Yeah not like they can remove the turf and lay grass down in the dome. I mean it has been done before..

Like Qatar? South Africa?

You aren't giving the US enough credit. These games will be as wild and well attend as anywhere in the world. Will you have to worry about taking a flare to the eye? No. But it will still be a hell of a time. Especially by 2026 when Pulisic is the undisputed best player in the world.

I'm sure they will be, don't get me wrong.
Just kind of feels like cheating to me to go to one in the USA. That's it.

True. I still just can't see them putting a WC game in NOLA either way.

I went to a WC game (not USA) in Dallas in 1994 and it was wild. Soccer has grown a lot here since then, and I think by 2026, it'll be pretty huge. I'm stoked that I'll hopefully get to attend another game or two. Though I'd love to go to a WC in Europe.

I remember years ago the Saints played the Packers in a preseason game where they put grass in the Dome as a trial

obviously that was Pre-Katrina (2002-ish... maybe?) but it has been done

also... the USWNT must've liked when they lost to China in the Superdome b/c they just announced they're going to play another match there in the coming weeks

ETA: it was 1999 when the Saints & Packers played that preseason game on grass inside the Superdome

There are serious plans for a huge renovation of the superdome including sky lights and a potential new roof for grass, as well as widening concourses and turning the garages on each side of the building into hospitality and entertainment areas.

The Superdome isn't dead yet.
