Why did teams play so scared in the knockout rounds?

The world cup was going amazing up until the knockout rounds, then there were wayyyy more 0-0 games. Of course the quality of the defenses was better, but playing for a penalty shootout or a moment of quality from 1 guy just seems like a little too cautious of an approach. It definitely made the games less fun to watch

its human nature to be more conservative when the stakes are so high. i thought the final was surprisingly open, though.

It actually reminds me a lot of the 9-6 Alabama game. Teams that can kill lots of teams, but when they play a team they aren't so sure about, things get REALLY conservative.

Fatigue plays a big factor as well, so playing more conservatively usually keeps the mental errors caused by fatigue down

I agree that some of the knockout games were very defensive and there were some games where very little chances were taken (see Costa Rica-Greece and Argentina-Switzerland up until Di Maria scored).

Let's not down play the fantastic play from keepers we saw though. Belgium could have had us beat in regulation had in not been for Howard and he wasn't even a finalist for the Gold Gloves award (though I think he should have been).
