All of my friends are mad that Guardado didnt miss the penalty on purpose and I have to admit that i was mad too, but thinking about it if it was my team I wouldnt have the balls to miss it.

What is the Soccer Boards opinion

You play to win the game.

Refuse to take it and tell the ref why.

Follow the example of St Pauli

I would have smashed it home and worry about how I felt about it after the match.

Plain and simple, you play to win. This tournament has a spot in a playoff for a spot in a larger tournament on the line. As much as I hate Mexico and hate the decision to award the penalty there, it's Guadardo's job to put it away. Showing distaste for it and holding off an any big celebration is enough of a statement without hurting your team.

I don't even want to imagine the consequences of him putting it wide on purpose in a Mexico shirt. The amount of piss that man would encounter would be unimaginable.

I've done that on FIFA or purposely scored an own goal when I felt like the game was unfair to my opponent. In real life, though, people take that shite way too seriously.

While I disagree in the fact that it was a penalty, there was clearly a debate about whether or not it was a legit call. In no way would I not take the penalty that was given. The ref is in charge of the game, if he felt it was a penalty, tough shite for Panama.

I would have probably shot it over the goal but not on purpose.

He did the right thing.

I think you still have to make the PK. It's not your fault that the refs blow. And with a spot in the confed cup on the line... I would feel bad about it though, but I would also feel bad screwing my team out of another tournament.

Youre right, if he missed it on purpose he would be a worldwide hero and everyone would remember his gesture more than they will remember mexico for winning the gold cup, but the mexican ultras would probably try to kill him.

I don't know who #21 for Mexico was...but he should have told the ref that it wasn't a penalty.

I dunno what I would have done...I go back and forth in my head on it.

I would have turned around and blasted the ball at the ref.

You make the penalty. You don't atone for a ref. You do your job. Just because someone else didn't do theirs doesn't mean you don't do yours.

Wouldn't even consider missing on purpose. I would've done my best to drill it passed the keeper.

I would have tried to make it and then not celebrated much like he did. I thought he handled it pretty well. You can't miss on purpose, you just can't.

The only possible thing would be if everyone on the team just refused to take it.

Just gonna add another voice to the "you just do your job, smash home the PK, and don't celebrate it". I hate to break out cliche shite, but two wrongs don't make a right. Just because the ref can't do his job doesn't mean I don't do mine.

I thought Mexico handled perfectly as much as I hate to say it. Herrera and Guardado both admitting it wasn't a penalty was class.

The fact he actually admitted missing it on purpose briefly crossed his mind makes me not want to hate him as much.

But I still do.
