What language do the soccer players speak when playing a game?

A majority of them don't speak English so it is out as a common language. The players and referees all have their own languages - Spanish, Portuguese, German, French etc. I see they are all very animated on the field, but I don't think they even understand each other. What do the soccer experts here think?

Mostly English... But sometimes there is no common language and they use the hand signals.

ETA I notice this a lot with Asian refs not being able to communicate very well.

My uncle talked to a board member of a Turkish club who told him that in Champions League games, the players speak in extremely broken English with the ref.

I don't think that is true at all. What do you base this on?

ETA: Unless they played in the EPL for a long time, I don't see them having many opportunities to pick up English.

Not as much as you would think. Enough to say a few words, maybe.

I'm going to RA for inappropriate language and personal attack. I don't need to take any 1010 from you.

It's not like they are writing a James Joyce novel

They just need to be able to tell each other to go frick themselves in a common language

Take a look at the signage around the stadium/field. There's a reason it's mostly in English. And it's not because soccer is so popular in America.

Every World Cup match I've seen where they go to the refs for the coin flip, the first thing he says is "English ok?" and every time both captains nod.

LOL!

Most learn English in school as mandatory...especially Europe...mandatory.

I summered abroad in H.S. and the two kids with my host family in Switzerland were fluent in 4 languages...English, German, Italian and French.

Only dumb-arse us...don't force a second-language as a country or even a third b/c our North neighbor speaks English and we don't bother to learn Spanish b/c Mericu or some stupid shite like that.

Well, you said it yourself, most other cultures learn English. Why should we be forced to learn another language?

Though I do remember being forced to take two years of a foreign language in high school.
