1) Johnson - I agree that his talents and abilities are more needed further up the pitch. However, if the USMNT go with an attacking lineup and another very good LW steps forward, Johnson can still be a valuable asset with his defense and his abilities and instincts would allow him to charge forward and be involved with the attack. He would also help the fluidity of ball movement and avoid those often painful and sluggish moments when Bradley has to come all the way back to take the ball from the back line and attempt to attack through the defense. Johnson at LB, with Yedlin at RB, makes the USMNT more multi-dimensional.

With those two we might as well play with wing backs

which I love esp with two solid CB's you can have sit deeper.

I still think a three man back line with those two as wing backs is our best formation.

So we are all in agreement: Johnson and Yedlin as WBs with Alvarado as the lone CB.

They tried the 3-5-2 once last year and it failed horribly? I just remember being excited for them to try only for them to abandon it at halftime.

We were winning 2-1 away to chile when we abandoned it for the 4-4-2 and then lost 3-2.

And then Jurgen never tried it again.

That doesn't really tell the whole story now. Yedlin and Shea were great going forward, but hardly defended at all. We were lucky to be up 2-1 at half. I do wish they would have revisited it later in the year, but oh well.

Both are in better form this year, and Yedlin has actually learned how to defend, when to get forward, when to stay back, etc. I would like to see us try it again.

Sam has been very good for yedlin IMO. He still gets too far forward but he's a good bit better than he was initially

I can get behind a 5-3-2.

Long term, you could be looking at something like this...

Bedoya at D mid? Perfect

Maybe it's because it's a 5-3-2 and not a 3-5-2 that you want it to line up that way. Seriously though, I might put Williams in Bedoya's spot, have Gonzalez play Cameron's spot, and put Cameron in Miazga's spot.

I want Cameron in the center of the backline, I feel like your best CB should be in the middle.

And we could sacrifice a true d-mid with three centerbacks... I think.

I would rather it be top heavy like the midfield against Guatamala. Def. mid with two attack midfielders.

I would prefer having our best aerial CB (Gonzalez) be the middle CB, while Cameron is the right CB so that he can cover for Yedlin when he goes up. Given how much he plays RB for Stoke, I think that makes the most sense.

As far as the d mid argument goes, I want the D mids if we only have 3 pure defenders. Yedlin and Johnson can be expected to push high up the field, and I think the extra cover in front of the CBs makes sense. Now if those wingbacks were to play more conservatively, maybe I would buy into that idea a bit more. But really we know how Johnson/Yedlin like to play.

I think I would agree with this if every team was like Guatemala, or if I had faith in our ability to possess the ball and be creative in the opponent's half. We are better when we set up as a counter-attacking team with stout defense, and really we always have been.
