Sounds like a terrible idea.

Sucks, but I'm sure we'd still get a majority of those games. No way FIFA misses out on that money.

This may be the only way we can land it with the current hate for the land of the brave.

So who gets the autobid?

Which is so short sighted and stupid IMO. If this is all because of Trump he is guaranteed to be gone by 2024 at the latest. In a democracy like ours the political climate changes every 4-8 years pretty drastically. Everyone should know this.

Would all 3 get auto-bids? Good deal for Canada.

Would make for a pretty boring qualifying round.

Probably has more to do with them adding more teams for the 2026 WC. More games, so they can spread it around more.

Kind of sucks, but with the World Cup ridiculously expanding to 48 teams, I expected it. Hosting a modern World Cup, like the Olympics, is a big albatross no country really wants to deal with alone. Great deal for Canada, as it's the only way they qualify anytime soon.

The US would still get the majority of the games. The Final would probably be in the Rose Bowl again, because Azteca is comparatively a POS, and it's already hosted two finals.

But yeah, if this is really about Trump, that's bullshite when you give the preceding World Cup to Qatar, a modern day slave state. By the way, Qatar just reduced their WC budget by half. Guess even those billionaires got tired of footing the bill for the eight brand-new stadiums or whatever.

And we thought the Brasil WC was a logistical nightmare with the one stadium in the middle of nowhere...

How did the auto bid work for Korea Japan in 2002?

It was already going to be boring. I think CONCACAF is going to get 6 bids.

Both countries received an auto bid and did not have to participate in qualifying.

Sad, but true.

The one upside of our inevitable collapse is we will be considered to host World Cups again.

Canada theoretically finessing an auto bid out of this frustrates me.

No chance they hand out 3 additional autobids to go along with that. Could you imagine 9 CONCACAF teams in the WC

Just give it to Canada. With the increase in teams, US and Mexico are locks anyway.

I think it could work pretty well. This guy on Reddit has a good set-up.

quote:

For the 8 groups you set them up as follows:
Group 1: Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Vancouver, San Fran)
Group 2 : Canadian Northeast (Toronto, Ottowa, Montreal)
Group 3: American Northeast (New York, Philly, Boston)
Group 4: American Midatlantic (DC, Charlotte, Atlanta)
Group 5: Florida Group: (Tampa, Miami, New Orleans)
Group 6: Did someone say texas? (Dallas, Houston, Austin)
Group 7: Southwest (Phoenix, L.A., Mexico City)
Group 8: Midwest (Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland)
Then you just consolidate the regions for the Round of 16, and Quarters. You can do this in North America, because unlike Brazil, all these cities already have state of the art billion dollar stadiums that only need a FIFA logo painted on them to be World Cup ready. So you can literally have a 24 venue world cup.
Edit: Just as an example, you can consolidate the Round of 16 and Quarter groups like this -
R16 - P. Northwest v. Southwest, Midwest v. Canada Northeast, NE v. Midatlantic, Florida v. Texas
In this case 1st in the P. Northwest group plays 2nd in the Southwest group and vice versa in the main venue of each regional block.
Quarters - Block 1 (P. Northwest, Southwest, Florida, Texas) and Block 2 (NE, Midatlantic, Midwest, Northeast)
In this case, for example, the winner of the P. Northwest v. Southwest matchup would play the winner of Florida v. Texas matchup.
Semis- One in the south, one in the north both located centrally (say Houston and Chicago)
Final - Major city (NYC or LA)
