I found the following in an SI article that I believe sums everything up as succinctly as possible:
quote:

How much faith does it have that each affected USL team will close every sanctioning loophole in a reasonable amount of time? And if that happens, is a second-tier USL worth the likely death of the NASL?

IMO, the answer to the second is yes.

Why? IMO, two primary reasons:

One, the nasl has massive issues with finances, ownership, oversight, management. And it's corrupt, in the words of an owner who jumped ship (Tampa Bay Rowdies). Kill it off. The viable, legit clubs will move into a D2 USL and be better off.

Secondly, the USL has earned it. Growth and investment has been impressive. Meanwhile NASL has made one bumbling move after another. I believe the USL deserves it more.

Yet I have no idea how this will go. If I am forced to pick, I think US Soccer maintains the status quo. They just seem to be reluctant to pull the trigger and make a big decision.

Well, it just came out...

Ussf essentially split the baby and granted D2 status to both the nasl and the usl. They basically pushed a big decision back another year and called time with the hope that the situation will resolve itself or something.

Jeff Carlisle of espn fc:
quote:

The decision concludes a long, winding process that leaves the USSF with the imperfect and awkward arrangement of having two Division II leagues. Neither league will be happy to have another entity alongside it with the same designation. But ultimately, both leagues got most of what they wanted. The NASL, which had been rumored to be shutting its doors, lives to fight another day, and will begin the 2017 season with eight teams. The USL, which will see 30 teams compete next year, moves up from Division III to Division II, a sanctioning that it has long coveted.

More from Carlisle:
quote:

standards dictate the minimum requirements needed to operate at each level, and include the number of teams, the geographic distribution of the teams, and size of the markets for the teams involved, as well as the minimum financial requirements of team owners. However, there has been considerably flexibility with how the USSF has applied those standards, with it granting numerous waivers to the NASL over the years. It must be said that, at present, the USL doesn't completely comply with Division II standards either.

Now both leagues will have the remainder of 2017 to get their proverbial houses in order. But left unexplained are what steps the USSF will take if one or both leagues fail to meet the standards it has laid down. That apparently will be left to the internal working group that Gulati mentioned.

This is just delaying the inevitable. The NASL is built on an unsustainable model and will collapse soon. MLS's investment into the USL by putting reserve teams there basically sealed its fate. Probably after this year, the NASL will fold and the USL will stand alone as the official second division.

USL Pro and its ties to the MLS is slowly becoming the #2 league. I see it and the NASL flip flopping, or at least both becoming USSF Division 2 soon.

NASL ownership seems to be an embarrassment. USL has done very well starting with the PDL. Looking forward to Pro/Rel soon!

I know. Sarcasm. MLS is tough to watch and this debacle of "leaders" making decisions at USSF isn't going to improve it anytime soon.

Honestly MLS is like other leagues. Top teams play great soccer. Lower level teams struggle. Except our lower level teams look really poor. Still, will support.

Nasl and their commish parted ways today. Supposedly, they will be up to 20 teams next year
