The annual "What's the deal with Freddy?" thread

Branching off from the U-20 WC thread, and re-watching those highlights from the 2007 WC in that thread, Freddy is showing ridiculous ball skills that can't be taught and is making defenders look stupid.

I thought he turned a corner in the Gold Cup. He was a surprise call up, but it paid off and he was arguably the man of the match in the semis against Panama.

However, he never has consistently been able to crack an XI with any of the clubs he has been with.

Even though he is now pretty much an after thought in the USMNT picture (he's still really young), I still can't wrap my head around his situation. He's obviously doing something wrong to not get any chance with a bunch of teams.

Is he lazy at training?

If he can ever put it together with his natural skillset, he can be pretty damn good.

Here are those highlights from the 2007 u20 WC for those that haven't seen them.

Hat Trick v. Poland

v. Brazil

He was at Benfica at the same time as Angel di MaLemur

He'd do something that was absolutely brilliant. Then, he'd do twelve things that were just stupid wrt what he was trying to accomplish.

The definition of trying to do too much.

Well, that's pretty much a given unless some crazy shite were to happen.

This is more of wondering exactly what went down to get to this point. The stupid hype he had at age 14 aside, the kid had talent but can't even contribute anywhere.

He must have a hard time understanding schemes, lack stamina, or both.

Dandy, you realize that putting random Spanish on here that no one understands without at least explaining it is just... dumb? Annoying? I don't know. Maybe you can help me with some sort of esoteric word to describe how I'm feeling. It's not that I'm not interested, because languages fascinate me, but your usually wise opinions sometimes go unnoticed because we literally don't understand you. Plus, idioms especially are difficult to translate, even for someone who might be proficient in the language, which most of us are not.

And in regards to the OP, I think you mean the biweekly what's the deal with Freddy thread. Being sarcastic of course, but you get the point.

re: The annual "What's the deal with Freddy?" thread
He just does not contribute consistently to his team

He spends 95% of his time trying to do the things that he became famous for, and it generally ends up with him being ushered off the ball. If he'd pick his head up (which he can do brilliantly) and spend his time playing simply to the benefit of his team, he'd easily work his way into the full national team setup and would definitely have a solid job

His time at Benfica is the best example of why he is not relevant. He'd do something that was unbelievably exceptional and then spend the next movement mimicking Eddie Johnson's mediocre decision making

ETA: I don't think that he ever really adjusted to others having the physical upper hand on him

I don´t believe I do it very often. I simply did it just now, because that´s what comes immediately to mind, and I searched my seriously flawed memory bank for English, and it didn´t come out. It did later, as you saw.

No big deal. You can post in French if you´d like. In fact, I´d appreciate it, my French is really bad, and I need the ´jog´.

What's your background? When did you move to Spain? Living in France I started to forget normal English diction.

I was at that game. He looked good. I was also at the final. Looked good there, too.

I saw him play for the Union twice against the Red Bulls. Flashes of unbelievable skill, followed by some dimwitted moves -including one red card.

Immaturity. Maybe, an ego problem? Not a team player.

It's all mental. DeMarcus Beasley has produced for a long time.Although, small. He isn't the biggest/best player. But, in his heyday he was pretty damn good.

ETA: Also, everyone says the youth system is broken etc. etc. Jurgen is going to come in and change everything. Honestly, it has never been that bad in terms of bradenton, n etc.

What is the biggest help is MLS and MLS academies. As we can see now. Sure there is always improvement. But, some people act like JK is going to change everything n it's in the dumbs. The wheels have been in motion for a long time.

ETA2: Look at the rosters of Uruguay, Spain, and Brazil. They don't have a lot of superstars that make up their full squad either.

Uruguay has Cavani, Suarez. But not that many other stars (that you'd assume) USA beat them.

Brazil had David Luiz, Marcelo, Alexandre Pato. Not that many other stars (that you'd assume). USA beat them.

i think all of these apply to adu...somehow the constant failure hasn't made him realize this

the thing beas has that adu doesn't, is speed

if adu had good speed, he could avoid his size issues and play on the wing. the problem is that he's not nearly fast enough to be an effective wing. that means he has to play a central AM role

while he CAN theoretically play this role well, he doesn't do it close to consistently. you have to be consisten to play as a CAM. he's a man without a position. i do think he should be on our team as an offensive sub, though

Beasley is WAAAAY faster than Adu. At however old he is (31?), I'd argue that in 9/10 matches he plays he's *still* faster than anyone else on the field. Being able to just run right past people masks a lot of deficiencies.

If Freddy was as fast as Beasley, he'd probably be around the Champions League. Unfortunately (for Freddy) he's about as fast as Pablo Mastroeni. That reduces him to being a juggler.... which really doesn't win games.

FWIW, I thought Freddy's best stretch as a full international were the first couple games of the 2009 Gold Cup.
