Superdome bids on Gold Cup Doubleheader

Mercedes-Benz Superdome General Manager Alan Freeman says they have bid for a Gold Cup double header next summer, noting it is an experiment of sorts.
"This will be a first for us," Freeman told WWL First News. "Soccer is pretty popular on a grass roots level. A lot of youngsters play soccer, but it hasn't shown that it's really viable as a far as a major spectator sport (in New Orleans.)"

I hope we win a spot! Would be really cool to be able to go to a game there. Will be interesting to see how grass works in the dome. I guess similarly to what Jerry World does.

Why would they have to do grass? Many of the American stadiums keep their turf down for soccer matches they host.

This is true for friendlies, and some other competitions. However, the Gold Cup requires grass for the tournament. Just different competitions with different requirements.

Going for sure if this happens

Unless they changed it after this past GC, then no. They held games in Portland, Cowboys Stadium and the Georgia Dome
Honduras would have a nice crowd in the dome if they played there

I'm just going on what the article states. I'll try to look it up further, but I do know that Cowboys stadium didn't use turf, they brought in real grass for their Gold Cup game.
ETA: The Georgia Dome also installed real grass for the game they hosted.
AJC
ETA2: Looks like in 2013 Gold Cup, only 2 venues had turf: Portland and Seattle. These were allowed because they are used for soccer year round and FIFA pre-approved. My guess is since the Superdome's turf is not ever used for soccer, it is not FIFA approved and thus they would have to put in grass. This would be in line with what Dallas and Atlanta had to do in 2013. FIFA Approved Turf

Why did this part really need to be said if they're really trying to get these matches? It's the Gold Cup, people will fricking come. This isn't Hondurans scrimmaging at Pan-American. Why even bid if you're going to have that shitty attitude?

It's about g-damned-time!!!!
We should have bid for World Cup 1994, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Detroit got it instead. What doesn't the GNOSF understand that people WANT to come here, I mean they sell the thousands of hotel rooms and restaurants less than a mile radius from the venue for every OTHER freaking event. Why not footie?
I asked this back in 1989 in a letter to Dr. Merv Trail, then president of GNOSF. They said the same thing, no track record of high attendance at events. I suggested then that Tad Gormley be used to show a track record and have as many matches as possible.....leauges, Honduras internationals...all I got back was that T.G. was too narrow for full FIFA sanctioned internationals.
New Orleans should have been in the USMNT rotation for years, now. Idiots.

well if he is qualifying it as it not being a major spectator sport in new orleans, he may have a point.

when do they announce the venues?

He may have a point. He might not. We don't really know do we? The closest MLS team is Houston, and the closest the USMNT has played recently is fricking Jacksonville. I actually remember reading somewhere that Nola has really good per capita soccer viewership ratings. It hasn't shown its a viable spectator sport in Nola bc there's been nothing to spectate.

He may have a point, but if you're seriously trying to get these matches, why the frick would you say that?

I would suck dick to see soccer played in the dome. No homo.

Changing the turf to something FIFA qualified would be easy as would putting down real grass.
I really hope this happens but I doubt it. Seems like a half hearted effort that boss agreed to after being badgered by the soccer guy in the office.

This would be awesome.
Agreed, Freeman's tepid response may be telling. Not sure how strong of a "bid" we'll be entering.

The Saints played a home preseason game in 1999 where they experimented and installed natural grass.
First game for NFL w/ grass field in a Dome stadium
So, it shouldn't be an issue. It would be a great start to bringing a USMNT game to NOLA eventually.
