quote:

I thought they’d won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end,” Ronaldo said (via the BBC). He took issue with Iceland’s tactic of loading up on defense and launching careful counterattacks. “It was unbelievable,” Ronaldo added. “We tried hard to win the game and Iceland didn’t try anything. This, in my opinion, shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition.”

Ronaldo's rant about Iceland seems a bit hypocritical given the way the final played out. Hinestly though, the strategy worked this tournament: Stay compact, defend well, keep good shape, and hit on the counter. Or is that just "playing small?" Congrats to Portugal, since they did what they needed to do to win the game, but Ronaldo's comments are pretty funny in retrospect.

It's also kind of delicious that Portugal win while Ronaldo sits on the bench.

Portugal is a shitty winner though. frick their play.

I felt bad for the guy, because it meant a lot to him. But Portugal won this tournament playing just like Iceland did, and I find this hilarious given how much Ronaldo melted over those tactics.

Everybody is going to just downvote you because they know you're right. Portugal sat back and defended and looked to capitalize on the few opportunities they got. There's a reason why it took them 5 or 6 tries to win a game in 90 minutes

Lot of Ronaldo lovers around here so I don't take offense to the down-voting. I find it funny actually. Ronaldo/Messi obsessives come around during the major tournaments and have the awareness of your average YouTube comment poster.

I'm not even criticizing the guy, but let's be honest it's pretty great they won the tournament this way.

yeah, I mean Messi got his team to 3 consecutive final matches, too.. neither one of them carried it over the line..

It was the only way to win the tourney. Ronaldo's comments were dumb, but Portgual played smart and were a deserving champion. The best team does not always have to win.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with playing smart and to your strengths, which were strong, organized defense and Ronaldo doing something incredible almost every game.

I absolutely agree... but will add, a 3rd place team making it out of the group of 4 is pretty weak... That said, they didn't make the rules and did what they needed to do..

I honestly don't care how you play. Wins are wins are wins are wins. I just found it to be hypocrisy of the highest order.

Absolutely. I wish the US played to their strengths better than we do.

He had a human reaction to a frustrating game. Let's not forget that the Icelandic camp talked mad shite before the game

And it was still a ridiculous comment to make. That fact hasn't changed. The irony of it is amusing, but a win is a win. Anyone (including CR) claiming that a team is somehow degrading the sport by defending and playing on the counter is naive and short sighted.

He went full Xavi, but on the day that fricking Eder scored the winner in a Euro final, it's not really something that I'm going to agonize over

The second best Eder in the tournament scored the winner

And I can't stress how completely useless he was for Swansea last year
