quote:

“The correct outcome should have been a penalty kick awarded for the use of the hand, and a red card for the denial of a goal—not the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, but the denial of a goal, because clearly the ball would have gone in had Frings not blocked it.”

I fully agree. I was too young back then to watch it live but rewatching it it's always pissed me off that we should've easily been given a penalty. I'm convinced we would've made it to the final, even though there was a clear referee bias for South Korea.

Are there any videos from angles other than the video that is in the link? I'd like to see one from right in front or behind the goal. Hard to see the movement of the arm from that angle.

I don't believe so, regardless, his hand is not by his side. It's subtle, but it's not in a natural position.

While playing any sport, having your arm straight down by your side is not a natural position. It's going to be out at some angle.

I just want to see it from a better angle.

Then the U.S. would have finished runner up at the World Cup in 2002.

No doubt in my mind that we beat Germany that day - heck we out played them (other than the Great Wall of Kahn) 11 on 11.

The article does note our injuries and yellow card suspensions would have been a problem for the semis -but I feel like we would have been able to beat S. Korea.

Brazil in the finals - always a chance we beat them, but I feel like the confederations cup final - the only way we take that one is if we somehow surprise them at the end. No way we could have held them scoreless or go ahead and keep them out of the back of the net.

lol. Landy cakes probably misses the penalty. Just like he missed the one on one opportunity with Kahn.

By chance, do you mean no greater than 5%?

We may beat South Korea despite playing on their home field and our yellow card suspension, but there is just no way we beat that Brazil team.

Agreed, but in that situation where Frings was in the box, it's more likely that his arm to be straight down (to avoid the handball) than not.

We'd have a better than 5% chance to beat Brazil. I wouldn't go over 40%, but definitely better than 5%. We had already beaten Portugal and Mexico by that point, and we could (should) have beaten Germany.

I'm not discrediting those results, Brazil in 2002 was just that good with Ronaldo at the peak of his powers, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo all in their prime years, young Ronaldinho.

Brazil was a vastly superior team. Folks forget Turkey was 2nd best team that tournament.

Mohawk Mathis had taken the only one in the tournament up to that point against S. Korea right?

I don't think we took a penalty in that tournament. Friedel saved a couple.

That team had the perfect formation and players. We were so fun to watch.
