SEC Soccer

WHAT IF SCENARIO: New SEC Network results in a loads of money for the schools and a power grab for network time. Schools add new programs, a women's sport (don't care, lacrosse, rowing, whatever) and Men's Soccer.....
How would the SEC would do with the sport? Yes we're a football powerhouse, but we've taken over some sports. Sports we can go toe to toe with any conference are baseball, gymnastics, track, swimming, w basketball and it took us pretty much no time to make noise in softball (SEC softball started in '97).....
How long would it take the conference to become a national contender? Would we EVER become contenders against the likes of Akron, the ACC or the California schools? Which schools are in position to be the best or quickest to embrace it? Would the higher budget schools go after serious coaching hires or just phone it in? Would the built in SEC rivalries be a boost?

Well, USCe and UK would get an early advantage, that's for sure.

would they be able to captialize and maintain it? or would the budgets of huge schools like Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia and Tennessee catch up. I think SC and UK, with both longer traditions and just being better early would be enough that ONE of them would maintain their dominance AND the addition of a native conference would elevate them nationally

Kinda not what the thread is about... but ok whatever... in this scenario, the season in lengthened, subs limited to 3, stoppage time included and whatever other modification occur to make you happy. I just wanted to know others opinions on the viability of SEC Men's Soccer as a conference wide sport.

im not gonna address the viability of this shite but it would be awesome. georgia and florida would presumably wreck shite. ive got about 10 transfers to uga lined up if it happens

I think the SEC would begin to compete within a few years. There's a lot of talent that goes to waste just because few schools have teams in the southeast. And who wouldn't want to come to a place where you could play year round. We'll just have to hire good coaches.

not sure how the SEC rivalries would help the Big 12 but I see what you're getting at.
Texas and Oklahoma I could see being big boys very quickly if the instituted programs.

LSU would be successful with soccer because of the high school programs in state. I don't know why the SEC hasn't started a soccer program

I'd guess that it has a lot to do with scholarship quotas. I do imagine there will be push for a change with the growing popularity but things like the current lawsuit against the NCAA (which has some chance of depleting the huge surplus of AD budgets) may deter that?
I do agree though that the development of top younger US players is a bit at odds with increasing the prestige of college soccer.
It would still be fun for students. I wish UCSD would have had a top flight program when I was in school but I did go to some San Diego matches and the atmosphere was pretty cool.

The top players in the nation should be playing with clubs overseas or in the MLS, not colleges.
