I know very little about soccer so please excuse my ignorance. I have a friend in England who supports Charlton Athletic so I follow them. They are currently in 17th place (10 points) out of 24. Last place team has 7 points.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the top two teams move to the higher league and the bottom three teams move to the lower league. I understand the excitement if your team is near the top and bottom but what's the enjoyment if your team is in the middle and stays in the middle. Too far from promotion but safe from relegation.

For those fans who's teams always float in the middle does it get boring?

How likely is it for a team to sit in the middle and stay in the same league for years?

Am I completely off base with my thinking?

Thanks for your time

Personally I have no idea, Tottenham fans would be your best source of reference.

Well, there's between 2-4 tournaments a team could win each year even if you are a mid table club.

Very likely. Charlton haven't been in the PL since 2007.

Villa used to be a mid table team and you always feel like you could be 2-3 players away from a team that could be close to the top. I didn't get bored. Now fighting off relegation like we are right now, that's tough. It's not boring, but it's scary. I am actually scared this year. I don't like it.

Don't forget the joy of making Europa League, losing to a small team you've never heard of and spinning it as giving your club a better chance to make Europa League again next year.

Once you get relegated it's hard to get back up. Norwich managed to do it some how.

The one thing Charlton has going for it is that it's a London club.

If they ever get back to the Prem, Players actually want to live in London.

They just need a billionaire oil sheikh to buy them.

Maybe PSG's sheikhs will get bored in France and invest.
