If the World Cup started today, these would be your seeded teams based on this month's FIFA rankings, and assuming all of these teams qualify for the finals.

1. Russia (Hosts)
2. Germany
3. Brazil
4. Argentina
5. Portugal
6. Switzerland
7. Poland
8. Chile

Infer what you wish based on this information.

At least the US won't be in a group with Germany and Portugal this time.

Obviously they're all at least decent sides, but Russia, Poland, and Switzerland are all beatable.

I don't want Russia. We would playing a road game. I fear 2002 South Korea level officiating.

How are Switzerland and Poland's rankings so high? The others I understand. Do they just win a lot of qualifiers?

Russia could have all the help in the world from FIFA corruption, they'd still find a way to lose.

They are awful and rival South Africa for the weakest host in World Cup history.

Well I know Switzerland hasn't lost in almost a year, but you essentially just have to win or draw games and doing so in qualifiers or tournaments count more heavily in the formula than friendly results do.

The best team Switzerland has beaten over the last year is Hungary who is ranked No. 33. So I guess they just haven't lost in forever.

ETA:

Switzerland is 6-0 in WC qualifying and went 1-1-2 in the Euro 16 w/ the only loss against Poland in PK's which is taken into account I believe. I mention the Euro's because I think the points date back to four years and depreciate yearly, but I may have read that wrong

Poland is 5-0-1 since last August w/ all five wins being in qualifying and the draw a friendly against Slovenia.

Poland also went 3-1-1 in the Euro 16 losing to Portugal in PK's.

Belgium

Have tied Russia and the Netherlands in friendlies and drew against Greece in a WC qualifier over the last year. Not great results.

France

Tied Ivory Coast in a friendly and lost to Spain in a friendly and a WC qualifier against Sweden. Most impressive win of 2017 is a 3-2 win over England in a friendly.

Spain

Spain's competition wins have been over really shitty teams which is heavier weighted part of the formula. They include two wins over Macedonia and another over Israel

quote:

Italy

Kind of in the same boat as Spain. They're competition wins include ones over Albania and Liechenstein. 8-0 friendly wins over San Marino don't help too much.

Friendly wins don't count for much in FIFA rankings. In fact, one of the flaws in the FIFA rankings is that if a nation plays less friendlies, its ranking will be bolstered. Beating a middling country like Slovenia and beating the crap out of teams like Andorra in qualifiers count more towards your FIFA ranking. There's been hints that certain countries (Wales comes to mind) purposely avoid scheduling friendlies in order to artificially enhance their rankings.

It's the November rankings that decide the 7 other pot A seeds besides Russia, right?

I'm hoping we can collude with Russia for a favorable draw.

Yes. The current rankings the day of the draw decide the seeds, and that should be the November rankings.

I'm hoping that Belgium picks up steam before the World Cup. Want to see a run from the golden generation.

These rankings are like the US News college rankings. It's all about gaming the system to maximize points. shite, I think a media vote like in college football has more validity.
