When I think of all time great it's name like Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, fat Ronaldo, Maldini, Muller, di Stefano, Zidane, Platini, Garrincha, Eusebio...

You're looking at less than 15-20 guys ever, it's not that unreasonable for there to only be 2 playing at a time. In fact I'd argue it's rare for two guys to be playing at such an incredibly high level for so long at the exact same time. Probably unprecedented in soccer history really.

He is trying to make a point about All-Time Greats and he lists Neymar like a possibility without even mentioning guys who are club legends who are still playing. I'll use Bayern as an example because they're who I follow most. You'll be an a-hole and call me biased but these guys are either all time greats or will be -

For example, Philipp Lahm is one of the best defenders of all time. He captained a team to a World Cup championship and a club treble.

Thomas Müller is 26 years old and has 10 World Cup goals. He also won a World Cup and treble as a significant player.

If Bayern wins the Champions League this year, Xabi Alonso will have won it as a central midfield leader for a team in England, Spain, and Germany.

It's just stupid as hell to say Messi and Ronaldo are all time greats and then act like the only one remotely close is Neymar. I personally think David Alaba, who is even younger than Neymar, will be an all time great as well. Players today are so much better than during his day.

Neymar is nowhere close right now so if that's what Pele is saying then yes he's a moron, but he is one of the few that have a shot to get there.

All those guys you mentioned are not really any different than Lampard, Drogba, Cech, Terry etc... the only difference is they play for a better national team and won a world cup. None of them will be remembered amongst the true global greats like the names I mentioned.

That's hilarious. Philipp Lahm is an all-time great, I don't even know how it's debatable. You listed Gerd Muller as an all time great but want to put Thomas Muller on a level with Lampard and Drogba? That's bad, man. Robert Lewandowski is a better player than Gerd Muller ever was.

A lot of those guys listed as all-time greats dominated their era because the average pro was shitty. The overall level of play is much higher now. Franck Ribery would be in the conversation for best player of all time if he played in the 70s.

You are smarter than that though, you can only judge people by how they stacked up against their peers. Any top level player today would have wrecked everyone had they played in the 70s and the greats from back then probably couldn't even crack first teams today at the big clubs and countries.

Frank Lampard scored over 200 goals for club and country as a midfielder and had a shite ton of assists as well. Thomas Muller should be honored to be mentioned in his company.

And I'm not trying to discount their accomplishments from their own era. I'm just saying it's stupid for Pele to try to act like there aren't any great players playing now. There are a lot more great players playing now, it's just that the marginal players are 100x better than they were when "Golden Eras" he's trying to reference were going on. AND, if he's going to diminish the world's greatest players to 3, don't include fricking Neymar as one of the 3.

I agree kinda. Like I said I don't think he's wrong about his era but I do think he's way off about his own.

Muller has 2 more goals for country in 36 fewer games and just 57 fewer goals in 205 fewer games for club. Let's tally them up in 11 years.

Not to mention that Lampard was a disappointment in nearly every WC match he played and never could play with Gerrard.

People will look back on his career in 20 years and realize how special he was. Lahm is an all-time great.

Not his fault they don't have goal line tech in the WC.

You are only counting his time at Chelsea, he scored 30 other league goals in England.

What is your standard? I'd say these are definitely world class players and greats today but all time?

By your standard would the following be all time greats:

Roberto Carlos
Thierry Henry
Romario
Ronaldinho
Roberto Baggio

Eta: are we only considering players currently playing or how far back are we going?

It's not uncommon to get delusion and bias from Pele but it does seem heroes and potential greats are thin compared to previous decades.

Guaranteed greats playing today are Messi,CR and Buffon.

Neymar might have potential but I would say Xavi and Pirlo have more chance in their years to eventually become greats. Certainly more for their countries than Neymar.
